Teddy the hamster was buried this morning in my daughters favorite hat. He was laid to rest next too her last hamster called Pearl who was and still is the best hamster to have ever lived. I think I bought her the hat in Carnaby Street last summer, it should keep Teddy warm on his journey to hamster heaven.

In other news after two months and fourteen days on the wagon, I am having a can of cider while making dinner. Some friends are round and its looking like a nice day...

Oh yeah ... Dennis Law, Bobby Charlton, George Best, Bryan Robson, Cantona, Steve Bruce, Wazza and Sir Alex... I did some cooking yesterday, a whole rack of pork ribs and my patented potato skin`s with bacon red onion garlic and green chilli`s. I didn`t end up eating a lot, because I never do when I cook, but everyone else did and no one threw up so I must have done something right...

A friend of mines brother is a big Man U fan and he popped round yesterday and after all the good natured flak I taken from the big fella this year about his team winning, you could say that I got my own back.

I also reminded him that Arsenal are now unbeaten in 15

Its a nice day outside the sun is almost warming the air to a reasonable temperature but not quite and my daughter is sending me funny sound clips on msn to make me laugh. She is getting a new hamster today !

How is the beer this Sunday Capt nice and I hope? England are playing rugby down the road today and the road outside my house is solid with traffic atm. There are quite a few coaches going past with the cross of St George taped across the windows. I,m going to avoid going any near "the nam" today. But it is a nice day to watch rugby...

i am in oslo so the beer is expensive and not extremely good. i have learned since leaving canada that canadian beer is strong. i always assumed canadian beer was normal and most other beers are weak, but it seems like that was just a bias based on where i landed on the planet. i still have some duty free beer from czech republic so its good for now.

Pun'KinG' ...Scott, please ask this question of yourself:

While some British food may be bland, there are some very nice foods that come from this island, its just that the average Englishman eats a lot of root vegetable`s and subsequently begins to take on the shape and i.q of the ground grown food. It is also the reason why our armed forces are so feared though out the world. We also have the best bacon fried eggs and black pudding to be had anywhere. Stuffed yorkshire puds are not too bad ether..

Its not such a problem these days as within five miles of my house I have four Chinese resturants, 3 Indian, 1 Lebenese, 2 fish and chip shops, subway, kfc, burger king, maccy dees, pizza hut, dominos, and three Greggs the bakers.

Our national dish these days is supposedly chicken tikka masala

Bacon and Eggs

In our imagination, we are sitting in a friendly local cafe, reading the newspaper. The bacon is fried only in the fat of its own rind until crisp. The eggs are then fried in the bacon fat. The smell is wonderful. In reality, the bacon is microwaved and the eggs rubbery. There is only yesterday's newspaper.

Good cafes do an 'all-day breakfast' so you can enjoy fresh bacon and eggs any time of day. Bad cafes do an 'all-day breakfast' so they can sell leftover morning breakfasts in the evening.

the way i cook food has more of a method than a recipe so i will tell you my theories about how to make a potato soup

onions first. cut them however you like and fry until soft in oil (or whatever you use to fry things) also add garlic if you like at this point. i like add jalepenos or spicy peppers at this point as well, but remember that if you add a lot your soup will be unbearably hot. you can always add some dried chili if its not hot enough but you can never remove anything you added at the start if its too hot. now potatoes. i use roughly the same volume of potatoes as onions, but being exact is not important. cut them however you like, the smaller the pieces the faster it will cook, so if you are in a hurry dice them really good. when the onions are soft (before they are caramelized), add the potatoes. after not too long the onions/potato/spicy mixture will start to stick to the bottom of the pot so deglaze with some water and scrape up all the good caramelized bits. then add enough hot water (i have a fancy kettle so i add boiling water) to cover the veg and a bit more to evaporate off later. add a bay leaf and salt to taste. some people like to use milk, but it doesn't really matter to me. if you like milk then by all means add milk.
after a while the potatoes will be cooked (when they are soft enough to pierce with a fork) and you can mash them as much you like, or blend it with a hand blender, or in portions in a normal blender. i am lazy and also don't own a blender so i mash it up with the bottom of a glass. the lazier you are the better, in my opinion. so now you have mashed up onions, potatoes and water, and you should let it boil for a while. if it doesn't thicken up, then you need to add a rue. this step is not always necessary depending on how much water you have added. a ruew is basically flour and water, but you have to make sure you aren't adding lumpy bits of flour. mix well some flour and water (1/4c and 1c respectively, but don't bother measuring its not important) and strain it through a colander if you have lumps. add a bit and stir up the soup. it should thicken up very fast, but if it doesn't add some more rue or else let it boil uncovered to reduce some of the volume of water.
make sure you taste it all the time while cooking and add salt/spices as you please. this soup freezes really well but let it sit in the fridge at least overnight before throwing it in the freezer so the tastes have time to become friends.
serve with some grated cheese and spices(dried chili is my fav) and crumbled bacon pieces for the nonvegetarians.

friday and saturday are a crazy animalistic binge drinking gong show. every other night of the week is quiet

It's quite simple really. Places like the Mediterranean and India and Mexico etc. all have hotter climates than ours (you'll notice German food and Eastern European food has a similar reputation to British), and thus, in the days prior to adequate refrigeration, had to find ways to preserve the meats and prevent them going rotten, and if they were going to go rotten, find ways to mask that taste. As a result, they use a lot more herbs and spices than we in Northern Europe do (also, their native herbs often have much stronger flavours), or use wine in dishes, etc.. In Britain, things lasted longer, and what didn't would be pickled or salted. Our soil is conducive to green and root vegetables, the wet climate grows many fruits and harvests are mostly good, and our land is suited to grazing all three major livestock, so there's been less need to be creative in the days before refrigeration/freezing of food.

British food, when well done, can be among the best foods on the planet. But it won't necessarily sound as exciting or exotic as other foods.

Of course, it also depends on what's "interesting" or "exciting". My Chinese housemates eat more or less the same things every day, and have rice with every meal. To us, Chinese food seems exotic and different, to them it's bland and routine.

... Scott
March 15th, 2009, 06:09 PM
 Yup English food does not really deserve its reputation. I have tasted pickled cabbage in Germany that almost killed me. But your Chinese friends are right rice is boring...

.................................................. .................................................. .............

Thanks Capt, I will be giving that a try sometime soon as it sounds really nice. I think I may even test it on my children when they come to visit for easter

My local cafe is round the corner and is full of old and new signed pictures of well known boxers. The guy who owns it used too own a gym, but now him and his misses make the best breakfast for at least ten miles.

Sometimes a little detox goes a long way Capt and people do say abstinance makes the heart grow fonder. I would have thought that sort of thing would be easy to find in almost any big city in Europe. Don`t tell they do not have dodgy looking bloke`s in Black Beamer`s who sell all sorts of illegal shit to masses from the darkness of the backstreets in Oslo. A friend of mine visited Bulgaria last year and his cab driver had a gun hanging on tape for easy access under his steering wheel. I am still amazed he made it back alive ...:what:...

since leaving canada (i always kind of new due to talking to my friends from other countries) i have found what it means when we say that canada has cheap high quality weed.

everywhere in europe has really disgusting crappy hash. amsterdam has normal quality weed (in my mind) for about 4-5 times the price i am used too, and REALLY REALLY good hash. i guess i am more of a snob that i thought because i won't smoke whatever it is they tell me is hash here. i tried it a few times and it sucks and is definitely not worth the price they pay..but everyone tells me that its pretty standard.

Talking to myself again ...

If I had known what I know now when it was then, then may well have happened differently but we are all slave`s to our feelings in the end and the logical answer is not always the right one at the time. But if the time is now it may well have been then but you missed it because you where looking the other way at something more interesting.

I always find that I have been looking the other way when the right way to look was the wrong way to go !
