does anyone really take anyone elses advice?
cause i'd really like to bring The John Butler Trio to all your attentions (plural?)
i'd always thought that they were an Australian band but just recently found out that the singer (John Butler) is apparently canadian
its very Ben Harper-ish wiht the slide guitars and twanging strings and shit but they also have a little bit of a jazz/funk/soul/blues feel.
theres a guitarist (steel string, slide/lap guitars, 12 strings, banjo's etc)
a stand up bassist ( double bass, fretless)
and the drummer is very very good in the same way that jazz drummers dont overstate their "role" as part of a BAND but still stand out like a dick in a ladies room
if i liked labels i'd almost call it progressive folk rock
but i dont so i wont.
i recomend any of their songs but for the first listen ever a song called Betterman would be ideal. it showcases what they all can do as part of a band and individually plus its the sound that really defines them as a band.
the John Butler Trio
Betterman
go (download) buy it now

are you sitting comfortably?
65daysofstatic (UK band mixing post-rock with electronica and breakbeats)
A Case Of Grenada (German hardcore band)
A Silver Mount Zion (Post-rock with orchestral tinges, Godspeed You Black Emperor! side project)
Alien Sex Fiend (pure batcave goth)
Bauhaus (Uberlords of original goth)
The Birthday Party (Nick Cave fronts seminal post-punk band)
Cocteau Twins (damn straight)
Cranes (off-kilter dreamy rock with strange female vocals)
Cult Of Luna (like Isis, but Swedish)
The Danse Society (synthy goth)
Dead Can Dance (world music meets gloomy folk, Australia's finest duo)
Dif Juz (mid-80s pre-post-rock)
Do Make Say Think (post-rock with a jazz tinge)
The Fall (obscure, bizarre post-punk)
Fantomas (Fantomas)
In Excelsis (scary OTT punk)
Jesu (post-metal goes insane)
The Jesus and Mary Chain (every indie band that sticks feedback and distortion all over sweet pop melody ripped them off. And that means, erm, every indie band!)
Killing Joke (pre-industrial, driving punk, aggression?)
Lush (like the Cocteau Twins but more poppy)
The Melvins (sludge lords)
Miocene (artsy British Tool impersonators)
Pelican (an uplifting, instrumental Isis)
Public Image Ltd. (underrated post-punk act featuring Johnny Lydon of the Sex Pistols)
Red Lorry Yellow Lorry (underrated old school goth)
Sex Gang Children (bizarre post-punk goth with Bowie impersonator)
Slowdive (I know Zep used to love them but I only just discovered them)
Southern Death Cult (The Cult before they were crap)
Swans (as depressing as you want to get. Their singer guests on a couple of APC tracks)
The The (bittersweet, angry pop)
Twin Zero (British post-metal)
X-mal Deutschland (miserable German gothic girl-punk. Yes I didn't think it would be good either but what do I know?)

Bleed me an ocean tonight
