man is that song ever depressing. it's just the way he sings it and the whole mood of the song (not to mention the depressing movie it's attached to): :suicide:

Sometimes I think that I know
What love's all about
And when I see the light
I know I'll be all right.

I've got my friends in the world,
I had my friends
When we were boys and girls
And the secrets came unfurled.

City of brotherly love
Place I call home
Don't turn your back on me
I don't want to be alone
Love lasts forever.

Someone is talking to me,
Calling my name
Tell me I'm not to blame
I won't be ashamed of love.

Philadelphia,
City of brotherly love.
Brotherly love.

Sometimes I think that I know
What love's all about
And when I see the light
I know I'll be all right.
Philadelphia.

oh yeah, and bob marley's redemption song. considering that was the last song he penned it makes it that much more sad.

Old pirates yes they rob I
Sold I to the merchant ships
Minutes after they took I from the
Bottom less pit
But my hand was made strong
By the hand of the almighty
We forward in this generation triumphantly
All I ever had is songs of freedom
Won't you help to sing these songs of freedom
Cause all I ever had redemption songs, redemption songs

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds
Have no fear for atomic energy
Cause none of them can stop the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look
Some say it's just a part of it
We've got to fulfill the book

Won't you help to sing, these songs of freedom
Cause all I ever had, redemption songs, redemption songs, redemption songs

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery
None but ourselves can free our minds
Have no fear for atomic energy
Cause none of them can stop the time
How long shall they kill our prophets
While we stand aside and look
Yes some say it's just part of it
We've got to fulfill the book

Won't you help to sing, these songs of freedom
Cause all I ever had, redemption songs
All I ever had, redemption songs
These songs of freedom, songs of freedom

Gary Jules - Mad World [song]
David Gray - White Ladder [album]
Leonard Cohen - The Songs Of Leonard Cohen [album]

Now Suzanne takes your hand
And she leads you to the river
She is wearing rags and feathers
From Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey
On our lady of the harbour
And she shows you where to look
Among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love
And they will lean that way forever
While Suzanne holds the mirror
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that you can trust her
For she's touched your perfect body with her mind.

I've been listening to them for years and never found them to be the least bit depressing. I mean they write great melodies, sometimes very catchy songs, nothing that moves me to tears. I don't really pay attention to the lyrics, so I couldn't tell you if they're depressing or not.

impressive. I'm annoyed I never saw this thread.

I second BBZ's suggestion of Slint, but only Spiderland. I also here will add Codeine, Idaho, Smog (from Burning Kingdom EP through to Dongs Of Sevotion), Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's "I See A Darkness", Dave Pajo's "Manson Twins", David Bowie's ""Heroes"", all of the first four Leonard Cohen albums.

The Cure haven't been depressing since 1982.
The Red House Painters have always been depressing.

The two most depressing bands of all time, however, are Joy Division and Arab Strap.

she waits all night for him to call

he waits to hear her say

i love you
but he tells no more lies

he waits for her to sympathize

she waits all night to feel his kiss

he waits to hear her say
