View Full Version : Should I get an iPod?

I'm trying to figure out if I should drop 300 dollars on something that stores my music. Opinions.

iha

I did. I love mine. I listen to my music so much more now b/c it's a lot easier. And I like having it all there so I can change albums and stuff easily too. Order it from the apple school discount site and you can get about $30.00 off.

If you do get an ipod, i'd also recommend getting the iskin evo2. It's a really good case. Otherwise, they scratch pretty easily.

here are mine and my brother's w/ the skins on:

and i kinda think this post should go in the Technology forums, but I see how it relates to music too :)

But why will it be locked?

I'm thinking I want one, but it just seems like a lot of cash.

anyways, i'm interested in an mp3 player myself, but 3 bills is a lot of money. i'm waiting a little more for mine.

I'll probably end up waiting until the Summer when I'm making more cash than right now, or my birthday in August.

Personally, I prefer the flash players. Even though they hold a lot less music at any given time, they are more reliable based on the research I did. A hard drive has the potential to crash. Plus, the rechargeable battery will eventually die and cannot be replaced unless you send it to Apple and pay around another $100. I have 600 CD's and wanted something to hold all or most of them, but after my research I went with a high quality flash player. I guess its a matter of preference, but for me, I felt more confident getting my iRiver flash player. Its still much more convenient to carry my tiny player than to carry around a CD player and multiple CD's.

DO NOT GET AN IPOD!!!

Creative media players are much better and cheaper, they are just not as trendy.

With Creative, you can create and edit play lists without a PC and enque songs from different bands and albums without interupting play. Both things iPods can't do.

If you are worried about the brand, creative has been one of the leaders in PC audio for years (Soundblaster anyone?)

Not to mention that the 40GB Creative media player cost $250, $50 cheaper than the 20GB iPod and $150 cheaper than 40GB iPod.

I considered the Creative Zen Touch, but I decided against it. The zen touch feels a lot bulkier than the ipod (because it is). Also one great thing about the ipod is all the accessories they sell for it. I've seen a few accessories for the iriver, but not many for other mp3 players (such as creative).

I'd say just go find a store that has them both and test them out and see which one feels better for you.

Supposedly the creative one does have better sound (which would make sense since creative specializes in computer audio), and its battery does charge longer. However I haven't had any trouble keeping my ipod charged up, and I listen to it all the time. Just plug it in everynow and then when I'm not using it.

If yes--> fuck it, why not...

If no--> save your money for a house instead of buying random shit that eventually adds up to nothing and you wishing you hadn't spent it on worthless crap that only makes someone else rich.

Don't get the Zen Touch, just the regular Zen is fine.

Touch screens are just more to break, the zen is less bulky than the touch, and the Zen are sturdy as hell. I dont know how many times I droped it in Europe, the case is dented but it plays just fine.

An ipod isn't worthless crap! Save up for a house? I don't think $300.00 will help out that much for a house. I have an ipod, but no house (of my own).. but i'm 19.. i don't really need my own house now.

Plus, the rechargeable battery will eventually die and cannot be replaced unless you send it to Apple and pay around another $100.

The key word here is "eventually". The battery in the iPod is rated to around 500 charge cycles, so under normal use it should give you a full charge for 18 months to 2 years handily, and still more life at reduced capacity.
It's worth noting that all rechargeable batteries eventually die, and the iPod is no exception, but you spend far far less money on rechargeable batteries than on alkaline batteries over that period of time.

you wankers obviously dont know much about hi-fi music. :tongue2:

you can get an ipod, they are good and trendy, or creative, they both are good, but none have gapless playback, or support better formats than MP3 (like OGG, or the best, MPC). If I had to buy a player, id get the Rio Karma, but the state of music players nowadays is quite pathetic.

Capt
February 16th, 2005, 01:01 AM
I bought a Sony NW-HD1 20gb music player

it doesn't play mp3s, wma or anything, it plays atrac3 and atrac3plus... kind of put me off at first but once i got used to the software i realized its nt going to be a big problem

its got good compression ratios, but few sound quality settings, it has two.. 64kbps is good enough, 256kbps is great.. so i use 256 for albums that i really like

it cost me 427$ but i am really happy about getting it, because i love to always have music.. plus i used money i got for my birthday so its no skin off my back

its tiny as hell, W89xH63xD13.8 mm and it looks pretty cool.. its got a built in lithium-ion battery that lasts "up to 30 hours".. i'm assuming that is if you play files at 48kbps and don't use the backlight... but its much better than an ipod or creative player that only brag about 10-15 hour battery life.. it supports usb 2.0 which i don't have (48$ to get a new port/usb controller in my computer) but files transfer quickly enough, i mean its not like you ahve to do it more than once

also... i've heard terrible things about creative's software.. i almost bought a 30gb zen xtra.. but they were sold out everywhere (including online)

so yeah.. its cool

i had a rio flash player (256mb) for about a week, went through 7AAA batteries and had to change the music once a day so that i didn't get sick of the songs, kind of tedious... it had an FM tuner on it though, that was cool

or support better formats than MP3 (like OGG, or the best, MPC).

iPods support a variety of formats.
They can play mp3s from 32 to 320 kbps, including VBR, AAC from 16 to 320 kbps, protected AAC from the iTMS, Audible audiobooks, AIFF, WAV, and Apple Lossless.

Apple doesn't exactly have an obligation to support obscure formats that nobody uses.

iTunes does that too. You can choose to import into MP3, AAC, Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV, at basically any bitrate and stuff you want. The Windows version of iTunes can also has the capability to convert non-DRM WMA to a less shitty format.

In other news, I was looking around at the Creative Zen Touch, and god, that thing is fugly. It's also larger and heavier than every iPod model, even the 60GB, only supports MP3, WMA, and WAV, and is not Mac compatible in any way.

For me the click-wheel is perfect. I have no problem navigating through my music. I would imagine it varies from person to person, that's why I suggested that before she decide on one specific Mp3 player, she shoudl go somewhere and test out them, get a feel for them, and see which one she is most compfortable with. That really is the most important aspect of an Mp3 player in my opinion. Whatever comes most natural, and doesn't feel too bulky (unless bulky is what you're looking for)

Well it'd still be worth it. I'd suggest deffinetly getting the iTrip, and not the belkin FM transmitter. I had the belkin transmitter, but took it back b/c I didn't like it. The belkin has it's own battery, so it doesn't take away from the ipod battery, but it is a lot bigger, and it doesn't fit on top of the ipod, it connects to it w/ a little chord.. which is annoying. The Belkin one will work for other products (like a portable cd player or something), but when you have an ipod there's not much need for that.

Well then. there ya go. I'm glad you tested it out first. I didn't have that option. The only place in my car that I can place it and not get a little static is pretty much on top of my dash, which realy isn't viable.

Heath
February 20th, 2005, 10:48 PM

Darken Elise
February 20th, 2005, 10:52 PM

Heath

What do you do, tell everyone to turn their radio to a certain station and play music for them?

If so, then it sounds sweet.

Darken Elise
February 20th, 2005, 10:58 PM
Yep. We use 104.1. But again, placement of the iPod is critical. If I don't have it plugged in to recharge, the radios get a lot of feedback/static. That i can't explain other then perhaps it's sending a stronger signal due to being "wired". I do work in a systems departement with lots of monitors, PCs, and wireless crap that may cause interference.

Heath
February 21st, 2005, 12:57 AM
Probably all the interference, and the charger gives it a stronger signal than the other stuff.

Since it's relevant, the iPod lineup was updated today.
iPod shuffles remain unchanged in capacity and price, having just come out, but the iPod mini line sees its first upgrade since they were released over a year ago. Apple discontinued the gold model and made the colors of the blue, green, and pink models more vibrant while leaving the silver model essentially unchanged. Apple also changed the color of the control indicators on the click wheel to match the case of the mini, and the mini now boasts an 18 hour battery. The mini now comes in 4GB and 6GB models, but no longer comes with a dock, power adapter, or FireWire cable, just the belt clip, USB cable, and earbuds.
The standard iPod line did not see upgrades, but Apple is no longer selling the 40GB iPod.
The iPod photo line sees significant price drops and now comes in 30GB and 60GB models, though the photo no longer has the AV cable, dock, carrying case, or FireWire cable packaged in the box, just earbuds, a USB cable, and a power adapter.

To show the old lineup and the new lineup:

Old:
iPod shuffle 512MB: $99
iPod shuffle 1GB: $149
iPod mini 4GB: $249
iPod 20GB: $299
iPod 40GB: $399
iPod photo 40GB: $499
iPod photo 60GB: $599

New:
iPod shuffle 512MB: $99
iPod shuffle 1GB: $149
iPod mini 4GB: $199
iPod mini 6GB: $249
iPod 20GB: $299
iPod photo 30GB: $349
iPod photo 60GB: $449

iha

I have a question for one of my buddies.

He's going to Europe for 21 days in June, and needs to know how to charge his iPod while over there. Does the normal charger have a converter, or does he need to get something to convert the voltage?

iha
February 26th, 2005, 12:20 AM
you can get things to plug into European sockets to convert them to american I think. I can ask my mom next time I go upstairs. She's been several times (and doesn't ever take me )

Heath
February 26th, 2005, 12:27 AM
I just read the small text on the charger, and it says it works from 100 to 240 volts. That should be fine, but I told him to get a converter just in case.

I assume places like Radioshack would carry them?

Did you ever get a skin for your ipod? If not then I suggest you get the iskin evo2 before your ipod gets scratched up. I love this skin b/c it protects everything I want it to protect, and isnt bulky like many of them. It also has easy access to all the ports.

http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B0002XN69C.01-AYDTV45EMV2Q0._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

when I bought mine, amazon.com had them cheaper than the iskin website.

I am curreltny questioning the battery life of my iPod. I have listened to it for probably 4 hours max, and the bar is exactly half empty. Isn't it supposed to be 12 hours? Or is it actually more like 8?

bleuMadonna
February 28th, 2005, 01:32 AM
Yeah, it's closer to 9 or 10 for me. I think a lot of the functions, such as the clicking noise on the wheel, backlighting, and just navigating the music list eats up the battery life as well as playing it does. I play mine a good 6 hours at work, and I use up a little more than half the battery on a full charge.

Heath
February 28th, 2005, 01:35 AM
Yeah, I only ran the backlight for 5 minutes this whole time.

No doubt that the max battery life is playing straight through, never changing songs or hitting a button.

bleuMadonna
February 28th, 2005, 01:36 AM
Exactly. I spin that wheel all over the place. I really don't need the backlighting. It's pretty and all, but not really necessary. I guess if I were lying in bed in the dark and wanted to listen to it, I'd put it on.

Heath
February 28th, 2005, 01:39 AM
That is exactly what I was doing when I had mine on for five minutes to select an CD to play. Lol.

Oh well, 8-10 hours is plenty I suppose.

By the way, it doesn't hurt the iPod to leave it on the charger after it is finished charging does it? Because I want to put mine on right now, but it will be done about a couple of hours before I wake up.

bleuMadonna
February 28th, 2005, 01:41 AM

Weak-sauce. I'll keep my netbook.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/27/apple-ipad-first-hands-on/

Here it is folks, the Apple iPad. The screen is gorgeous, tilting is responsive, and the thing is super thin. Still, if you've used the iPhone before -- and you can see the two devices side-by-side here -- there's not a lot of surprises here so far. Here are some initial thoughts on the iPad:

* It's not light. It feels pretty weighty in your hand.
* The screen is stunning, and it's 1024 x 768. Feels just like a huge iPhone in your hands.
* The speed of the CPU is something to be marveled at. It is blazingly fast from what we can tell. Webpages loaded up super fast, and scrolling was without a hiccup. Moving into and out of apps was a breeze. Everything flew.
* There's no multitasking at all. It's a real disappointment. All this power and very little you can do with it at once. No multitasking means no streaming Pandora when you're working in Pages... you can figure it out. It's a real setback for this device.
* The ebook implementation is about as close as you can get to reading without a stack of bound paper in your hand. The visual stuff really helps flesh out the experience. It may be just for show, but it counts here.
* No camera. None, nada. Zip. No video conferencing here folks. Hell, it doesn't have an SMS app!
* It's running iPhone OS 3.2.
* The keyboard is good, not great. Not quite as responsive as it looked in the demos.
* No Flash confirmed. So Hulu is out for you, folks!

Stay tuned for a lot more -- including a full video walkthrough!

Apple's iPad announcement earlier this afternoon prompted a score of WTFing across the internet, prompting many to ask, "Are there any women on Apple's marketing team?" Answer: Apparently not. (Period.)

From Twitter (for what it's worth, #iTampon is apparently the number three trending topic on the site.):

tjakabon: "It surfs the web AND stops the bleeding."

Gelatobaby: And you can use the giant QWERTY keyboard to get your period on the #iPad!

CarolBlymire: Is #apple making an iPad for light-flow days? Just wondering...

Trish1981: iPad? Really? All I can say is, I'm sticking with Always, bitches.

tremendousnews: So I can say "That chick is on her iPad" and not be called a pig? Thank you Apple.

melissapierce: iPad has changed "the conversation" from how we use tech in context to how we use tech as Kotex. (who named this thing?)

TwittsMcGee: I haven't heard this many period jokes since I was forced to watch The View last month. #iPad

kathycacace: Okay, just one more. The iPad: protecting your data from embarrassing incidents.

Johnpapa: "64 gig iPad will forever be known as the heavy flow model."

From the comments section of "Period Pieces":

lady_justice: Did the prototype come with a belt?

Lymed: Does the Period Tracker app come free?

fauxfruit: If I order this, will my boyfriend and I have to worry if it comes late?

andBegorrah: If you and your friends all buy one, will they sync up?

boston_nj: Meh. I'll wait until they come out with the iDivaCup

morninggloria: Don't wear white jeans while using an iPad, and especially don't use an iPad in front of your crush. You're a teen magazine embarrassing moment waiting to happen.

ms negative the easy-going unicorn: someone needs to make a 'mysterious blue liquid stain on white' wallpaper for this.

LilSpitfire: Later in the year they will be releasing the companion tablet pen, the Ipon.

Vesuvius At Home (I believe in peace, bitch): But what if the cute boys see me shopping for one? What if my dad has to take me??

NellMood: It's so beautiful when an electronics company finally becomes a woman...

Cinnamoncanuck: @NellMood: Aunt Flo will be so happy! Reply

soykatrina: Eh, I prefer the CVS brand. A few bucks less but does the same thing...

vlvtjones: So will iffy Wifi coverage be called iSpotting?

morninggloria: Can I get a scented iPad for when my data feels not-so-fresh?

Mary McCarthyite: Everyone, just try to Stay(free) calm and Poise(d). It's Always nice to see a new product on the market. I Depend on Apple to come up with great ideas. Maybe we're taking this out of Kotex.

Lymed: Somebody give the iPad a Red Bull, because it ain't no good without wings.

andBegorrah: Are you there, God? It's me, Marketing.

NellMood: iPads are for 8th graders. I'm waiting for the iTampon, because I prefer to do all my interneting from inside my vagina.

BicSharpie: Hopefully it will help people deal with the 24-hour news cycle.
