Alice In Chains Reform
The remaining members of Alice In Chains (Jerry Cantrell, Mike Inez and Sean Kinney) are to play their first show together since '96 as part of a tsunami appeal benefit show.
The gig will take place at the Premiere Club in Seattle, USA this February (4th February). Internet rumours suggest that the band will be joined onstage by an as yet unnamed vocalist.
Hammer is taking bets on one of the following:
Scott Stapp (ex-Creed frontman)
Ryan McCombs (ex-Soil frontman)
Chad Kroeger (Nickelback)
Josh Todd (current Buckcherry frontman)
Dave Grohl (current Foo Fighters frontman / ex-Nirvana drummer)

Eric Rogers (ex-Stereomud frontman)
Chris Cornell (former Sound Garden / current Audioslave frontman)
Scott Weiland (former Stone Temple Pilots / current Velvet Revolver frontman)

It won't happen. In an interview after Jerry's solo tour with Creed, he pretty much said the Creed guys (my guess was that it was Stapp and he didn't want to publicly bash him) wouldn't give him the time of day. He said the Nickelback guys were way cooler to hang with. I've seen Alter Bridge, and the remaining members are much more approachable than they ever were with Creed.

antiMUSIC is reporting that former ALICE IN CHAINS members Jerry Cantrell, Sean Kinney and Mike Inez will be joined on stage by DAMAGEPLAN frontman Patrick Lachman during their appearance at a tsunami benefit concert next month.

"For the benefit, the reunited group will perform material from the ALICE IN CHAINS catalog, and recording new music remains a possibility. "We're just starting with the gig, and we'll see what happens," Cantrell said. "But we can't wait to get into the room together. I've been thinking about this--except for them keeping the name AIC, how is this any different from Audioslave or Velvet Revolver? They're all existing bands with new singers. The other two did completely new albums, and to my knowledge, don't play the songs from the old band, but from a personnel standpoint what's the difference?
Can you have AIC without Layne Staley and still call it AIC? I mean, I've seen Jerry live and he played a shitload of AIC songs anyways. So I don't think this "reunion" is really that big of a deal.

After enduring the overdose of his bandmate and severing ties with his label, former Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell is putting his life back together and enjoying the reconstruction.
"The past couple of years have been rough,"
"The past couple of years have been rough. ... It was a lot to get used to, but I'm in a much different space now." — Jerry Cantrell
Cantrell admitted. And how. Alice in Chains singer Layne Staley died on the first date of Cantrell's tour in support of his 2002 album, Degradation Trip, which meant the end of Alice in Chains (see "Layne Staley Died From Mix Of Heroin, Cocaine, Report Says"). "It was a lot to get used to," Cantrell said, "but I'm in a much different space now."
A far more productive one, too. Since Cantrell moved from Seattle to Los Angeles eight months ago, he has written several new songs, recorded with numerous other high-profile rockers and played with some of his favorite musicians. He's also been in communication with former Chains bassist Mike Inez and drummer Sean Kinney, and plans to jam with them later this month.
"We don't have any expectations," he stressed. "We're gonna get in a room, have a little fun and see what goes down. Anything's possible."
Inez and Kinney performed on Cantrell's 1998 solo album, Boggy Depot, but haven't played with him since Alice disbanded. Cantrell was busy working on other solo material with other musicians, but that wasn't the only reason for the separation.
"I was kinda waiting to see if the Alice thing would ever materialize again," he said. "But I really miss playing with those guys."
Even if nothing magical happens with Inez and Kinney, if the last six months are any indication, Cantrell will remain busy. A top priority is writing new material and figuring out what to do with the tunes he wrote last year, which he said are unlike anything he's previously recorded. "It's really its own thing," he said. "I'm not sure which direction I'm gonna go with them, but the music's great. It's definitely a next chapter, which is satisfying."
One of the tracks features vocals by Cantrell's friend, Filter frontman Richard Patrick. After the recording, Patrick returned the favor by having Cantrell record guitar riffs that may end up on the next Filter album.
Cantrell is also excited about "Ashes to Ashes," a track he recorded last November with Damageplan, the brutal metal band consisting of former Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell and drummer Vinnie Paul (see "Damageplan Put Pantera Behind Them With New Found Power"). The song, submitted for the "Punisher" film soundtrack, features Cantrell on vocals alongside Damageplan singer Patrick Lachman, Cantrell said.
"It happened around Thanksgiving," he recalled. "I went hunting with my dad and brother, and we bagged a deer and then headed down to Dallas. I always give Darrell some of my kill, and we ended up hanging out. He had a tune he wanted me to check out, and it was great. So he said, 'We don't have any vocals on this. Why don't you try to throw something down?' I was really tired 'cause it was like 6 a.m., but he was really persistent. So I threw something down and it became this great track that sounds like Pantera crossed with Alice in Chains."
Visiting another musical dimension, Cantrell entered the studio two weeks ago with veteran rockers Heart to record a solo for "Fallen Ones," scheduled to appear on the group's upcoming album. "The song is really rocking and soulful, and that was fun," he said. "They guested on [Alice in Chains' 1992 EP] Sap, so we've been friends for a long time."
Cantrell recently played two gigs with supergroup cover band Camp Freddy, which also features Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro, former Guns N' Roses drummer Matt Sorum, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and Cult guitarist Billy Duffy. The experience inspired Cantrell to schedule a jam session with Smith and talk to Duffy about forming their own cover band.
Camp Freddy played at a Houston Super Bowl party, and earlier that day Cantrell did a solo show as part of Sammy Hagar's Super Bash.
On February 22 in Seattle, Cantrell will help celebrate the music of Jimi Hendrix. The guitarist will join Mitch Mitchell of the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Billy Cox of Hendrix's Band of Gypsies for versions of "Hey Joe," "Manic Depression," "Spanish Castle Magic" and "Stone Free," the latter of which will feature vocals by Bad Company's Paul Rodgers.
Later this year, Columbia Records plans to release a double-disc "essential" Alice in Chains compilation, which will likely mean more performance and promotion obligations for Cantrell.
"The funny thing is, I didn't plan to be this busy, it's just happening," Cantrell said. "I actually slated some time to chill out in my new hometown and write. But all these opportunities have presented themselves just from hanging out with my buddies. It's a great thing, and I'm really happy to be in the space I'm at."

Some of Seattle's brightest musical stars came out for a cause
By TRAVIS HAY
SPECIAL TO THE POST-INTELLIGENCER
Who would've thought Maynard James Keenan, the spooky singer for Tool and A Perfect Circle, would have made a near perfect singer for Alice in Chains? That was one of the many surprises Friday night when some of Seattle's brightest musical stars came out for a cause at Premier nightclub.
The cause was a benefit concert for victims of last year's tsunami and the stars included Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, Supersuckers, Sir Mix-A-Lot and others. But the brightest stars were the remaining members of Alice in Chains -- drummer Sean Kinney, bassist Mike Inez and guitarist Jerry Cantrell -- who performed together for the first time in six years.
Novoselic acted as emcee for the show, which was put on by radio station K-Rock (KRQI-FM/96.5) and raised more than $100,000 for relief efforts.
The reformed Alice in Chains featured several big names filling the shoes of late vocalist Layne Staley, who died of a drug overdose in 2002. Wes Scantlin from Puddle of Mudd, Pat Lachman from metal band Damageplan, Ann Wilson and Keenan all shared microphone duties throughout the evening.
While none of the vocalists were dead ringers for Staley, each turned in remarkable performances that paid justice to the fallen singer. The band performed two sets, one acoustic the other plugged-in, with Lachman taking the lion's share of the vocal duties.
But the evening wasn't just about Alice in Chains. The Wilson sisters performed a three Led Zeppelin covers along with "Barracuda" and "Crazy On You," Sir Mix-A-Lot offered up rap-metal versions of "Baby Got Back" and "My Posse's On Broadway," and Supersuckers played a blazing set.
But still, Alice in Chains owned the evening. The band's acoustic set started off with "The Killer Is Me," which was followed by "No Excuses." Lachman fared surprisingly well while Cantrell sang backup. Later in the set, which closed with "Down In A Hole," Ann Wilson brought a soulful edge to "Brother."
For its second set of the night Alice in Chains opened with "It Ain't Like That" from "Facelift." After the song Cantrell introduced Scantlin, a surprise guest, who sang "Again" with Lachman and then took over vocal duties for "Would" and "Angry Chair." Between the two, with Lachman's pointy goatee and Scantlin's Staley-esque stage movements, they could've passed for a Layne doppelganger.
But it was Keenan, another surprise performer, who proved the most natural fit at replacing Staley. His twisted and braided hair flew as he prowled the stage while singing. He impressively nailed "Man In The Box" and "Them Bones."
For the last song of the night, Wilson, Keenan, Lachman and Scantlin took turns trading verses and lines during "Rooster." The "We Are The World" style rendition of the song was the perfect ending for a magical night filled with surprises.

The acoustic set (in FLAC format) is at easytree.org. You have to sign up and getting in can be tricky. It's always full, but it only took me three or four tries to get in as they update the list of registered users daily. I don't know if anything is out on the electric set yet. I'm so hoping something shows up soon.

I haven't heard of any of the Maynard tracks being out yet, but I'm on the lookout. I can't wait for them, dammit. The people I know who went to the show said he was his usual amazing self.

We are very sorry!
At the moment, there are at least 100,000 registered users at www.easytree.org, the maximum allowed under EZT's current configuration.
However, free slots become available for new users daily as inactive accounts are deleted. When EZT has fewer than 100,000 registrants, new users can sign up. Please note that the statistics on EZT's web site are updated every ten minutes; therefore, you may see this message even if the web site reports fewer registered users than the maximum.
Thank you very much for your understanding.

I'm still kind of new to this whole thing  so I need kind of a step-by-step here. Any help would be appreciated.

I thought Maynard did great on Man in the Box. He did pretty well on Them Bones, too. He didn't embarrass himself, that's for sure. Not the way Wes did. Wes just sucked.

Maynard was a bit off on his timing on Them Bones, but he sounded good otherwise, and did a nice job with MITB, except when he held out notes, the vibrato annoys me a bit.
I actually thought the singer from puddle of shit would have a good voice, guess he didnt. :nana:

Anyway, I think the one that best fitted was Pat Lachman. When I first heard him on Damageplan, I thought he was good and versatile, and with AIC, he´s been my favourite.

I didn't mind the vibrato, but yes, he was a little off timing-wise, but not annoyingly so.

I saw him live on some talk show a year or so ago and he was flat as hell, same as for the tsunami show. He also fucked up lyrics a couple of times. I just thought he was awful. Pat, on the other hand, was great. He was killer on It Ain't Like That and Down in a Hole.
