You know what I was just wondering?
Okay...when we're talking about planes being hijacked...couldn't they come up with some sort of system, on every commercial plane, where they had their regular computer/flying system, for everyday use...but then, if a plane becomes hijacked, either the military or the FAA would be able to digitally disengage that system...essentially lock it up...and then kick in an automatic pilot of their own that would safely guide the plane to the nearest airport? Doesn't that sound like technology that could be used?

Not a bad idea if you ask me. Planes essentially fly themselves now anyways, seems to me we could use the same technology we use for the Predator drones and incorporate that into commercial flights.

I mean, I know it would be expensive, but what is cost, when it would pretty much eliminate hijacking?

Well, they dont always know a plane has been hijacked before it's too late. Besides, I see the beefed up airport security as working just fine.

I guess, but it's a real pain, if you're at a bigger airport.

I dont find it an inconvenience, and it's well worth it, to me.
Joga
January 19th, 2006, 02:06 PM
Well, yeah, it's well worth it, but I do think it's inconvenient. I think that something like that could be useful not just in the case of hijackings, but also in cases of some mechanical difficulties.

Try flying out of Dulles or Reagan International. What an unbelievable clusterfuck. Nothing like spending 4+ hours waiting for your flight to depart. Thankfully work doesn't require me to fly anymore because I was scared shitless prior to 9/11 and that just compounded the issue for me.

I can imagine. I'm actually less scared to fly now than before, but it's still really annoying when there are thousands of people in front of you, half of which act as if they've never flown before, all trying to get through security.
On another note, let me just take a short opportunity to bitch about people who bring their life's possessions with them in an entirely-too-huge suitcase that they insist on cramming into the compartment overhead. Why? Why? Why must they do that?
On my way to Portland a couple weeks ago, the flight attendants gave this woman grief because she refused to check her child's stroller, which was a very expensive one, because the airline had ruined her last one, she said, and it caused a lot of stress when they were in an airport, on the first day of their vacation, with no way to carry their child. The woman finally said "look...if these people can bring gigantic suitcases on the plane, fine. But telling me that I'm not allowed to put this in an overhead compartment so that we may accomodate all of those gigantic suitcases is ludicrous."
They let her keep it there. I was happy.
