I'm not sure if anyone here plays poker, but I just started playing this year... I think it's great. I 'spose this is a place to tell your stories n' shit.

I just posted this somewhere else, but yeah tonight I think I was lucky. I won against a few very experienced guys I know. Just playing people on campus, so all I've won this week has been $25 (after including losses), but it's really fun...

In a second game, I lost a good deal of money when I had a pretty good hand unfortunately, to someone who won it on the last card drawn. Kinda sucked.

I'm even still learning; so it's good to play with good honest people. I had the basics down after a couple of games; it's not too bad... if you have some friends who know, ask them to teach you :)

I play poker at least 3 times a week. I've been in a few tournaments, nothing REALLY big, though. I love the game. Person, do you ever play online? It's not as great as playing in person, but it can be fun too.

Oh, i mainly play texas hold'em.

A while back i made a thread about one of my bad experiences...

lol, I'm not that experienced.... I'm unfamiliar with the term Texas Hold'em. Can't say I've played online before, either.

And ouch; that sounded frustrating.

Ah, i see. Do you know the name of the game you play, other than just calling it poker? If you don't, maybe you could explain it. How many cards are dealt, and so forth.

I tend to play online at www.pokerstars.net it can be good practice and a lot of fun.

Person

Alright. Everyone is dealt 2 cards; 2nd person to the left of the dealer is the big blind (dealer rotates clockwise), the 1st to the left is small. Everyone calls or folds (or raises), then the flop is dealt. And so forth.

Of course, we don't show our cards... which I have heard how some people play. The best 5 card hand wins, and you don't need to use both cards you get at the start.

edit:
Oh Iha, you really do :P

It's good fun.

Ha, that's texas hold'em. It's the most popular right now. If you ever play online let me know (if you want to, of course)

Person

Sure. I don't know how it all works over the internet, but I might give it a look... I wouldn't want to play for money over it though.

I don't play for real money online either. You do make an account and it keeps track of your play money chips, though.

Fuck. I just had the worst game I've ever played... I didn't get a single good hand until my last, and I was beaten by the last card put on the table, giving someone a straight. First out, and I'm not fuckin' happy at all.

That sucks. How many people do you usually play with? And, do you usually play where you start a game with an entry fee and the winner gets the pot, kind of like a tournament, or can people come sit in at any time?

the best I've ever finished is 2nd place in a big tourney.
i've won various little games here and there.

Better news from last night, came second, and I think I should (and could) have won it. But yeah I usually play with somewhere between 5-8 or 9 people; and lately we've been having tournament-type games with an entry fee. If there are a lot of people it'd be possibly the top 3, otherwise the top 2.

i'm a bad loser AND a bad winner
if i have a good hand its :eatshitloser: :nelson:
but if i'm trying to bluff, its pretty obvious :cringe:
which is one of the reasons the internet is so good for me to play poker
on the other hand it sucks cause i dont get to see anyone elses faces

The guys i play with almost always split it when it's down to two too. I haven't gotten to play in a good game for a while now. Hopefully i can get a game togather this weekend...

'To two too' wow, should i have typed that differently?

Nah I get ya. But the winnings for us go like 40-20-10 or 40-10 or whatever. Winner takes the vast majority in most cases.

2nd place usually gets your entry fee back, possibly a bit more.

Jonesy
September 8th, 2005, 02:03 PM
I like that way more than how my crew does it. They just like to stop the game and split it when only two are left.

Person
September 8th, 2005, 02:06 PM
ha. The last game I mentioned, I was playing with that one person for about 50 minutes; possibly more. It was just going back and forth, until I lost a big hand. The the following one, I went all in, hoping for a flush - I had 2 diamonds in my hand, 2 on the table, with 2 cards left to turn. Nonetheless, I lost :(

It was really frustrating at times when the other guy was down to just a few chips, and I would want to go all in but my hand would suck.

Jonesy
September 8th, 2005, 02:17 PM
Those draws like that can hurt. Even though the odds are against you, it's usually hard to throw those hands in. When you're down to two people though, you gotta take chances since the blinds are high at that point.

We play with this one guy who almost always catches what he needs on the river. I don't believe in luck, but damn, some people i've played with just seem to defy the odds. That's really frustrating.

Person
September 8th, 2005, 02:23 PM
Yeah, I know what you mean. That game, somehow it seemed that a couple of cards were really working for me. I didn't have them at the end though. It was really weird; I got these exact same cards twice in a row and won a decent amount both times, and a couple of times before that they were good as well.

I haven't played poker since probably 3 weeks or so...:sigh:

Person
September 22nd, 2005, 02:18 PM
Damn... yeah I played it a lot... like 5 times, about 3 weeks ago myself, and since then I've only played a little bit, like twice. Kinda sucks...

Also since then my playing has began to suck, just haven't "felt" it... been too conservative or something.

So yeah I won't be playing for another week at least, but I hope to really get back in shape after the mid-semester break.

Jonesy
September 22nd, 2005, 02:20 PM
I do that sometimes. I just go through stages where it seems like I play really bad and have no idea why. Maybe I'll get back in to it pretty soon.

Won $50 in Poker this week, overall losing $20 after a couple of games... Not too bad. Gotta go to the casino one of these days.

You guys must play up front because all that we have in the rear is liquor.

I also have used lottery cards for sale too if anyone is interested. Cheap.
