Shocked? You ever seen Marty's record in the playoffs? With 5 minutes left in the game he was probably already figuring out what he was going to say in his press conference concerning the loss.

Yes, I'm well aware of his playoff record, but on occasion, the worm turns and it was looking pretty ugly for the Pats for a lot of that game, except when they were running the hurry-up offense.

When Marty challenged that play I knew they were done. He's awful at managing the last 10 minutes of a game. And it bites him in the ass every year.

And the only coach worse than Marty at managing the clock is Andy Reid. Holy cow......is he ever going to learn that you have to RUN the football from time to time to give your defense a breather?

I know. Reid drives me nuts. He must have been calling the plays on Saturday instead of Mornhinweg. And the lame-o pass on third and 1 at the 5 yard line was a ridiculous call. He's so predictable.

I wasn't so bitching about that play. But the last 4th and 15th call was idiotic. Personally, I would've taken the gamble and keyed in on either LJ Smith or Westbrook.

Oh, for sure. That play was stupid. I was at a friend's house and the four of us watching the game started yelling, why aren't they going for it? They hadn't stopped McAllister all day, so everybody knew the Saints would just run the ball, get the first down, and be done with it. They only had 1:56 left, I think, when they decided to punt. Stupid call. It's not as if they had 8 minutes left in the game. Reid chokes in the big moment.

London to host 2007 regular-season game Click here to find out more!

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/9933984

(Jan. 16, 2007) -- London will be the venue for the first regular-season NFL game to be played outside North America, the National Football League announced.

The NFL will stage the first in its new series of international regular-season games in the United Kingdom's capital city in the fall of 2007. NFL owners voted in October to play up to two games outside the United States every year for the next five years, with the series kicking off with a single game in 2007.

"There is great interest in the NFL around the world," said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. "Playing a limited number of regular-season games outside the United States is the next step for us in serving that interest. This is what our international fans, media partners, and sponsors want. There is no better place to begin this initiative than London. It is one of the great cities of the world with an established and growing fan base for our game. We are thrilled to bring the excitement of the NFL regular season to the United Kingdom."

London's effort to secure the game was supported by Mayor of London Ken Livingstone, who visited Commissioner Goodell in New York to state the city's case for staging an NFL game.

"London is proud to host the first competitive NFL game held outside the North American continent," Mayor Livingstone said. "There are many NFL fans in London -- both American and non-American -- and this will be a spectacular sporting occasion. The Super Bowl is followed by almost five-million people in the UK. Hosting an NFL game in London will bring more than 10,000 international visitors to the city. London will be working with the NFL to build on this success to ensure that Londoners, NFL fans, international visitors, and the tens of millions who will watch the game on television have a great day of sport and experience London at its best."

London was selected based upon several factors, including general fan interest, current NFL visibility through existing media agreements, the range and quality of large, world-class stadia, including Wembley and Twickenham, the size and value of the overall sports and entertainment market and the potential to build year-round marketing, sponsorship and fan engagement.

More details about the London game -- including the venue and participating teams -- are expected to be confirmed during Super Bowl week (Jan. 29-Feb. 4) in South Florida.

The NFL staged its first regular-season game outside of the United States in 2005 when 103,467 people saw the Arizona Cardinals play the San Francisco 49ers in Mexico City on October 2 -- the largest crowd for a regular-season game in NFL history.

I'll go. Viva la three pound Megabus. Hope it's Twickenham and not Wembley because a) it's easier to get to, b) it's a better stadium, and c) been there several times before. Oh, and d) it's not Wembley.

A regular game on Sunday is not comparable to a game notorious for people having parties for. If people are so insistant on having parties, then im sure they would work their busy Saturday schedule around it.

Maybe, but kids have organized sports, music lessons and other activities like that many times on Saturdays. People also do their grocery shopping, housecleaning and what-not on Saturdays if they work M-F.

The bottom line is that they won't change it because it's "Superbowl Sunday". A tradition, like was mentioned. But that to me is silly. If everyone has parties that evening, it should be on a Saturday, as I see it. As it stands, you won't ever see me at a Superbowl party the way it is now. The rest of you can waste vacation days or be a zombie at work on Monday, i'll be sleeping comfortably.

no I'm drawing from a specific moment after the Steelers beat the Colts.. Manning talked about Vanderjagt and the defense...meanwhile he may have completed 7-10 passes in the first half...he constantly over threw his receivers AND at the end of the game, he tried for the end zone twice instead of trying to get closer..which in turn might have effected Vanderjagt's kick...

It's because commentators will always fellate the guy with the better reputation. It's like in soccer; some nobody turns a defender with a backheel, it's "nice turn". If Zinedine Zidane does it, it's "sublime!!! incredible!!! amazing piece of skill from Zidane!!!". So it is with the NFL - Grossman doesn't have the reputation for being one of the best out there, so he'll get criticised for things Peyton can get away with.

And while I agree with breast that Peyton heaving for the endzone no way excuses just how FAR wide right Vanderjagt was, I also agree with Steel that Peyton was pretty useless in the first half, and in the 3rd only just escaped a sack for a safety, by a matter of centimetres, mostly because he held on way too long...

With precious few exceptions, the team with the better quarterback wins the Super Bowl.

Yea, that's why the Steelers won it last year with Big Ben putting up 22.3 as a QB rating. It's down to sixty minutes on the clock. And besides, look how successful Chicago managed to be last year with Kyle freaking Orton under center. Sure, Grossman's no Theismann, but he does his job.

Also, I desperately want Peyton to flunk it again because he annoys me with that stupid down syndrome dance he does when he's calling the plays.

breastnorton

reading just the first two pages of that i agree with most

what makes young better is two things:

ability to run, neither brady nor manning has any ability whatsoever to scramble to GAIN yards

young is still the highest rated passer ever

DJSteel
January 29th, 2007, 03:19 PM
Steve Young had 10X the weapons Tom Brady had

Jerry Rice is the trump card.. add in Brent Jones, Ricky Watters, John Taylor all better than anyone Tom Brady plays with

breastnorton
January 29th, 2007, 03:23 PM
i still think people overlook the fact that tom brady's success, or the success of his teams has less to do with him than with the entire rest of the team and his coach

the arguement shouldn't be about who the talent was around him, but the skill of the qb, i think young wins hands down against brady (to the point that is laughable to even compare them, though i did) and manning (when his career is all done) vs. young would be a better debate

DJSteel
January 29th, 2007, 03:28 PM
Manning is more comparable to Marino... both are the same types of QBs, Peytons breaking all of Marino's records.. Manning is clearly a better passer than Young, Young was a better rusher..

Brady might have been a success because of the SYSTEM, but not because of the players around him. Think about this.. name one guy on that offense that has been there during the 3 superbowls that will go in to the hall of fame???

Want to know why they lose the big game so readily with Manning compared to the Patriots and Brady?

POSTSEASON PERFORMANCES

Brady’s superiority over Manning is built upon the foundation of each player’s postseason performances. Quite simply, Manning, as we have long noted, is the Picasso of Choke Artists, the Betty Ford of Chokeaholics and the Al Choker of glib pigskin weathermen.

Brady, meanwhile, has already proven to be one of the great clutch performers in postseason history and has the Super Bowl rings, Super Bowl records and Super Bowl MVP awards to prove it.

For all of Manning’s brilliant regular-season fireworks in recent years, he has choked every year he’s been in the playoffs. That’s right. Every year. Don’t believe us? Come, take a drive down Manning’s postseason memory lane. But roll up the windows and lock the doors. It’s an ugly neighborhood.

1999 – In Manning’s second year in the league he led the Colts to a 13-3 record and an AFC East title while averaging 26.4 PPG in the regular season. In Indy’s first playoff game the Colts hosted wildcard-game winner Tennessee. The Indy defense played well, surrendering just 19 points to a high-powered offense that averaged 24.5 points per game. But Manning, at home in the dome, put just 16 points on the board, the team’s third lowest output of the season, while completing just 19 of 43 passes for 227 yards and zero touchdowns. Manning’s 60.9 passer rating was his lowest of the entire season. Result: Manning chokes. Colts lose, 19-16.

2000 – The Colts went 10-6 behind Manning’s 33 touchdown passes and an offense that averaged 26.8 PPG in the regular season. Indy went to Miami in the wildcard round and its defense played heroically, intercepting Jay Fiedler three times and surrendering just 23 points in a game decided in overtime. But Manning struggled and, in a game that lasted more than 70 minutes, was a non-factor. He completed barely 50 percent of his passes (17 for 32) for just 194 yards and a touchdown. The Colts generated 11 points off Fiedler’s interceptions but put a total of just 17 on the board, 10 points fewer than their regular-season average. It was Indy’s second lowest scoring output of the season. Result: Manning chokes. Colts lose, 23-17, in overtime.

2002 – The Colts went 10-6 and drew a gimme in the wildcard round: a 9-7 Jets team with a Swiss-cheese defense that surrendered 336 points that year (Indy boasted the better D, surrendering 313 points). Manning played the single worst statistical game of his entire career (14 for 31, 137 yards, 0 TDs, 2 INTs and a career-low 31.2 passer rating) and failed to put a single point on the board. Result: Manning chokes. Colts lose, 41-0.

2003 – The Colts went 12-4 in the regular season and scored 27.9 PPG. Manning kept it going in Indy’s first two playoff games, leading 41-10 and 38-31 victories over Denver and Kansas City. But Manning, facing foul weather and a good defense, returned to his historic postseason form in the AFC title game against New England. Indy’s D again played heroically, stifling the Patriots in the red zone and forcing them to settle for five field goals. But Manning tossed four interceptions and posted the third lowest passer rating of his entire career (35.5). Result: Manning chokes. Colts lose, 24-14.

You’ll notice a remarkable difference when you look at Brady’s postseason performances. Let’s take a stroll down a much more attractive memory lane. Roll down the windows and caress yourself in the fresh, breezy air of victory.

2001 – In Brady’s first playoff game, and just his 15th NFL start, he crafted one of the great postseason performances by a quarterback in NFL history. Facing a 13-3 fourth-quarter deficit and a blizzard of legendary proportions, Brady was virtually flawless in the fourth quarter and overtime, ran for one touchdown, led a game-tying drive near the end of regulation and went 8 for 8 on New England’s game-winning overtime drive. In some of the most severe conditions in franchise history, Brady completed 32 of 52 passes for 312 yards (with one first-half interception). Did we mention the blizzard? Brady critics are quick to decry the controversial “tuck rule” that overturned a potential late-game fumble by Brady. The call certainly gave New England hope, but it was not a decisive one. The Patriots still needed two scores to win and Brady was virtually flawless when the game counted most. We submit this as the greatest postseason debut by a quarterback in NFL history. Result: Brady gets it done in crunch time. Patriots win, 16-13.

Two weeks later, in just his 17th NFL start, Brady led the only walk-off scoring drive in Super Bowl history. After St. Louis forged a 17-17 tie, New England took over on its own 17 with 90 seconds to play and no timeouts. The football establishment expected New England’s inexperienced QB to take a knee and play for overtime. Instead, Brady completed 5 of 8 passes (one incompletion was an intentional spike) to put New England in range for a decisive field goal. It was the first walk-off, game-winning scoring drive in an NFL championship game since Johnny Unitas led the Baltimore Colts to an overtime victory in 1958. Brady became the youngest quarterback to win a Super Bowl and was named the game’s MVP. Result: Brady gets it done in crunch time. Patriots win, 20-17.

2003 – Brady led the New England offense to 11 points in the final three minutes of Super Bowl XXXVIII – throwing one touchdown to linebacker Mike Vrabel – and lifting the Patriots to another Super Bowl title. New England trailed, 22-21, midway through the fourth quarter. With the NFL title on the line, Brady completed 10 of 13 passes for 103 yards on New England’s final two drives. He ended the game passing for 354 yards and three scores and set a Super Bowl record with 32 completions. Brady became the youngest quarterback to win two Super Bowls and joined Starr, Bradshaw and Montana as the only players in NFL history to win multiple Super Bowl MVP awards. Result: Brady gets it done in crunch time. Patriots win, 32-29.

The chasm of Cold, Hard Football Facts separating each player’s postseason performances could not be more dramatic. Manning has appeared in four NFL postseasons, compiled a 2-4 record despite leading one of the most prolific offenses in football each season, choked at least once each postseason and posted a cumulative passer rating of 54.6 in his four playoff losses. Three times in four seasons in which he’s made the playoffs, Manning recorded his single worst statistical game of the year in the postseason. Two of the three worst statistical games of his career (31.2 and 35.5 passer ratings) came in the playoffs.

Brady’s postseason career includes six postseason starts, six victories, and four game-tying or game-winning drives at the end of regulation or overtime. Half his postseason games were played in conditions hardly conducive to great quarterbacking: One game was played in snow, another in a blizzard and another in the coldest game in franchise history (wind chills of -10). He was nearly flawless in a series of postseason games in which a single mistake would have cost his team victory.

And just for shits and grins. Hell with the Young comparisons. Here's how he stacks up against Montana.

Tom Brady began drawing comparisons to Joe Montana, the greatest legend in Super Bowl history, early in his career.

The “pundits” have been incredulous, but no less an authority than Bill Walsh,
who coached Montana through three Super Bowl victories in San Francisco, confirms that the comparisons are more than valid.

The Cold, Hard Football Facts agree, at least if we look at their performances through their first three Super Bowl appearances. In fact, the numbers between the two mirror each other so closely that it’s almost hard to believe:

* Both were named the MVP of their first two Super Bowls.
* Both threw to receivers (Jerry Rice, Deion Branch) who were named MVPs in the quarterbacks’ third Super Bowls.
* Both won their first Super Bowl in games in which the opposing offense gained more yards.
* Both threw for 1 TD and 0 INT, and passed for less than 200 yards, in their first Super Bowl.
* Both threw for 3 TDs and passed for more than 300 yards in their second Super Bowl.
* Both threw for 2 TDs and 0 INT in their third Super Bowl.
* Montana completed 65.6 percent of his passes in his first three Super Bowls.
* Brady completed 65.7 percent of his passes in his first three Super Bowls.

Montana posted a higher passer rating than Brady through three Super Bowls, primarily because of his far superior average per attempt (9.1 YPA to 6.8 YPA).

Montana truly separated himself from the rest of the pack of Super Bowl quarterbacks with his MVP performance in his fourth championship game. Montana completed 22 of 29 passes for 297 yards and 5 TDs (147.6 passer rating) in Super Bowl XXIV, a 55-10 win over Denver.

i'll take young without reading any of that

probably because none of it has to do with any comparisons to Young, Young isn't even mentioned, so no comparison could have been made.
