Payton tried to think too much about how to attack the colts defense... they never went deep.. hell they didn't even playaction... they looked like a college team out there...

I agree with what Steel just said, they didn't look like last year's Saints but still.....the Colts D, for having lost all they did this off-season, sure didn't look like no push over. I thought they'd get physically bullied and they didn't.

The pace of the game was great...i loved the pep talk payton commercial....and I LOVED how payton threw all over David last night.

damn straight, the colts have a soft schedule this year...particularly this year. the saints have some fairly easy games, then midway, they get hit fairly hard.
at least i was partially right in my prediction through the first half, but the colts just destroyed the saints in the second half. at least football is here, and dallas clark looked awesome last night, :byrche:.

the best one had to be the romo/jerry jones commercial imo. that totally cracked me up. and the peyton manning pep talk/dance commercial...that one was also good.

the colts won more games in a row last year than payton manning won total in the first 3 seasons in indianapolis, its not like they are the yankees.
only 4 player on the entire colts roster have ever played anywhere else and i can only name 2 of them, booger mcfaraland and vinteri.
why does everyone hate the colts?
blah blah blah, they only win cause the bears, saints, etc. play bad. you ever think the saints looked like shit because they got fucking crushed. eat dicks.

lmao.. because they reside in a shitty division and like the Patriots 'dynasty' they don't have any competition to knock them out of the division lead..
so what they don't have many free agent pick ups.. Steelers do the same.. their last big free agent signing was Duce Staley...lol

Colts kick ass regardless of their division. They proved it in the playoffs last year, they prove it every year...hell, they proved it in the Super Bowl, they proved it last night. It's not just cause the AFC South doens't give them much competition. They could be in whatever division and they'd still own.

who would knock them off besides the patriots? the chargers? no, they will be lucky to win 9 games this season.

Steel...I am serious. They prove it year after year. They beat the best of teams. Don't speak like they can only beat up on inferior teams. Every season, during the regular season they beat the best of them. In playoffs is where they've fallen short before until last year but their regular season schedule proves they can take on the toughest of them and still remain a force and come out division champs year after year.
I have no doubt that if they were in the AFC North....they'd be an ever better team, not only division champs.
DJSteel
September 7th, 2007, 01:53 PM
1. The AFC Championship game was the Super Bowl.. no one in the NFC can beat any of the top 4-5 teams in AFC..from the NFC...
2. The Colts will always be good until the rest of the teams come to actually play in a season.. Jags have no QB, Houston has no defense, Tennessee is mediocre at best..
3. To be honest, Payton out thunk and coached himself out of a win in that second half.. They never took a risk down field.. and their defense stinks..so did I think they'd stop the Colts.. hell no.. but I did think their offense would atleast show up yesterday

you and your "weak division" arguement!!! lmfao. Theres only 6 division games played, plenty of room for a team that isn't as good as they seem to be to be exposed when they play 12 non division games. You make way too much of this whole division nonsense.
AFC North - lmfao, give me a break. By your own admission the bengals are over-rated and won't go anywhere. Browns are a joke. Steelers are very average at this point. And so it all rides on the ravens, a team with a pretty bad offense and good defense with an aging MLB. LMFAO.
Colts would mud stomp all thru that division.

I know they won the final battle in the playoffs...but playoffs here is irrelevant. We're talking about how the Colts always have a fighting chance cause they're given a playoff/division champ spot by default since the division doens't give them competition. You said that if they were in the North...things would be so different. I said they wouldn't and provided some proof.....a sweep. This year...they'll own teams yet again. The AFC South isn't all they play all season. They play 11 other teams of different division and different conferences and 2 teams of their tier (play off teams play 2 playoff teams from same conference). They don't only win their divisonal games, no sir.

They play 11 other teams of different division and different conferences and 2 teams of their tier (play off teams play 2 playoff teams from same conference). They don't only win their divisonal games, no sir.

You guys HAVE to get younger on defense. They looked completely gassed by the 4th quarter. That's the last thing you want a coach like Gibbs to see because he will punish you for it.
The line and the rest of the offense will come around under Cameron. He's a very good offensive minded coach. I liked him when he was an assistant with the Skins. Green is a great stop gap for a year or 2 but you need to draft a guy this year. If I were the Dolphins I would draft a QB in the 1st round and spend the rest of the draft on D-Linemen and maybe a project WR.

yep. we really do need to get younger players on d, but i think we need more help on our secondary than anything else at this moment.
i'm liking cameron myself too. previous dolphin coaches would have NEVER gone for the touchdown on 4th down to close out the second quarter, so i liked the ballsy call. hey, and if it doesn't work out, at least we have the other team's offense backed up on the 1...dangerous with our defense.
and we did get a qb, remember john beck (http://www.encircling.us/forums/showthread.php?t=8347)? he's 25-26, so it won't be long until we use him. we also have cleo lemon, but he hasn't really stood out for me. i guess he'd make an ok backup, but with our o-line, i wouldn't put anyone other than a scrambler like vick back there.

Brain fart. Forgot about Beck. I think Cameron and his staff can correct your OL problems without doing anything too drastic. I like Carey at LT. And the right side of your line looked pretty good in pass protection. Not so good at run blocking though. I hope that has more to do with our rush defense though. :eee: We were atrocious against the run last year (5.5 ypc). It seemed like every week someone was rushing for a career high against us. :grrr: If yesterday was any indication that won't happen this year.
Btw.....I hate ZT. Jansen is done for the year because of him. :frown2:
"When I got rolled up on, I could feel things pop. I could feel things break," Jansen said. "My foot was pointing the wrong way. ... It was quite painful. It was a little less painful after they reset it on the field there." ---Jansen is hard as nails.

q&a with troy stradford:
South Florida Sun-Sentinel.com
Troy Stradford Q&A
The former Dolphins running back (1987-90), who starred at Boston College before being drafted by the Dolphins, answers your questions.
Sun-Sentinel.com
11:09 AM EDT, September 11, 2007
Q: Can the Dolphins offensive line improve enough this season for the Fins to have an effective running attack? Could you compare them to the O-line from your days on the team? Dave Rivera, MacDill AFB, FL
A: "In leaning on a number of former NFL linemen, I'm being told that it can take anywhere from half a season up to the remaining few games for offensive linemen to come together. There's a lot of trust that has to be built between all of them before you can expect consistency. With the Dolphins having five guys working together for the first time, I don't think any "Player of the Game" awards are coming from guys wearing numbers in the 60's or 70's. To answer your question about comparing the O-Line from when I played to the line on the curret team, my guys were great at one thing - and that was protecting Danny Boy. We had our challenges when trying to run the ball. The reason for that was because we worked on the passing game 85 percent of the time in practice, so the big guys were more in their comfort zone when pass blocking. The identity of this offense has yet to take shape, so it's too early to say if this O-Line will be better pass blockers or run blockers. But one thing is certain, it will not happen overnight."
Q: Hey Troy, one of the first things you did in your rookie year was return a preseason kick for a touchdown. Why do you think Ted Ginn has not shown much in the return game yet? Roscoe, Fort Lauderdale, FL
A: "Roscoe, you will hear the word patience used often -- from coaches, writers and other so-called experts -- when talking about young players coming into the NFL. I also will use the word patience at times because young players have to learn certain techniques, systems and the little nuances of the NFL to become an effective player. However, when it comes to the return game, there is no place for the word patience in my book because 95 percent of it comes down to instincts. There is not a lot of thinking going on or much that you have to learn. It's all instincts. Now, if you put exceptional ability on top of the instincts, you come up with a special player such as Devin Hester. If you have someone who has average ability (solid catching the ball, toughness) to go along with his instincts, you come up with someone like a Wes Welker. That being said, when I look at Ted Ginn, I see a player who has the ability (good hands and speed) but I have yet to this point see him possess the natural instincts of someone who will be special. Ginn is the type of returner who will shine when his blockers execute to near perfection, allowing him to get to top speed quickly so that he can use his number one weapon, his speed. My early opinion is that Ginn will be a solid returner, breaking the big one only when given the perfect blocks. I also feel that he will be more of an effective kickoff returner then a punt returner because he will have more time and space to allow his great speed to become a factor."
Q: Do you think Ronnie Brown is being used right? Between Nick Saban the past couple of years and just by judging from Sunday, I feel that RB isn't being used right. Is he good, a bust or somewhere in between? Michael Hogue, Washington DC
A: "Michael, when you really break things down, there are only a few ways in which you can use running backs. You either hand it to them or throw it to them out of the backfield. I also am mystified as to why we are not seeing more out of Ronnie Brown, after all we are talking about a guy who has the size, strength, instincts and vision. I will cut him somewhat of a break because his offensive line is still a work in progress (However, Ricky Williams did not have a great line and he put up great numbers). But at some point, a running back has to be able to make things happen on his own. I'm not buying the Cam Cameron line that he is still a young running back in terms of the amount of carries that he has had. As a running back, you either have it or you don't, and every time Ronnie plays a game, he confirms in my mind that he's not -- and will not -- become an elite NFL running back."
Q: Hey Troy, sorry for the off-topic question, but is it true that you are married to a Miami Heat dancer? Andrew Reich, Hollywood, FL
A: "I was going to pass on this one but the truth of the matter is, I was but am no longer. I can also say that the marriage did produce the love of my life, my son Austin, who is 11 years old. He's very smart and a hell of an athlete...remember the name."
Q: Is there anyone on the current Dolphins team capable of executing "the move"? Thanks for all the great years! Mark Haney, Estero, FL
A: "Mark...not on this team. Very few are blessed with the ability to make "the move"!!! Thanks for the compliment."
Q: Why does Ronnie Brown always stutter step before he hits the line? Isn't that a waste of precious time? Howie, Ocala, FL
A: "Howie, there are times when someone is in your face immediately and you are forced to stutter or make a quick move, but I often find myself yelling for Ronnie to just hit the hole and hope for the best, too. I have a saying...if you hit the hole hard and often enough, eventually you will come out the other side. As a runner you can help yourself out by just hitting the hole hard during the early part of the game, sending the message to the defense that it's going to be a long day while setting them up for the stutter step later in the game. It's all about setting the defenders up throughout the game. Ronnie, if you are reading, give it a try...hit the hole hard throughout the first half, then give them a change of pace in the second half. Yeah, just call me coach now."
Q: Hey Troy. I've been watching you since you were at BC. What are you up to these days? Ray Veradt, Taunton, MA
A: "I'm glad that you asked that question because it gives me the opportunity to plug my show. Every Saturday before Florida Gator games and Sunday's prior to our broadcast of the NFL game of the week, I do a radio show on 850 (AM) WFTL. On Saturdays I'm joined by former Gator and Tampa Buc Errict Rhett and former Michigan Wolverine and Raven Rod Payne as we take a look at the college games. On Sunday, I'm joined by former 'Cane and Baltimore Raven Leon Searcy and former Dolphin WR James McKnight as we tackle the NFL. In my opinion, it's the Best weekend sports shows in South Florida. It's the GameDay Insiders, It's the Players Club, It's where the Pros talk to the Pros. Hey it's your choice, do you want to get it from those who played or those who wish they played? Give us a call this weekend 877-850-8585."
Q: Do you think we can stop the dropped passes that have plagued us for years? What's the biggest reason for the drops, and how do you stop it? David, Fort Lauderdale, FL
A: "When it comes to catching the football, it's all about concentration. Granted some guys have better hands than others, but if you are one of those guys who has a case of the drops, you have to go back to the basics of spending extra time before and after practice catching passes. Confidence plays a huge part in catching passes as well. So, if you put in the extra time and stay focused during the game you are less likely to put it on the ground. I think too many guys outthink themselves, and because of that, they have drops. Look at how many guys who will make a great catch in traffic or in a split-second situation, and then drop a pass when they are wide open. There's too much time to think about it. The mind can play serious tricks with you if you don't build confidence."
Q: How do you think Cam Cameron did in his first game as Dolphins coach? Steve Freed, Sayreville, NJ
A: "Steve, there are things that I like and things that I didn't like. I love the fact that Cameron went for the TD right before the half. That shows and builds confidence in your team. I did not like the fact that the offense pretty much looked like the Dolphin offense of the past five years, and the offense is Cam's baby. I was waiting for the Cameron express...but there is always next week. In looking at the defense, which starts and stops with Dom Capers. It's hard to be too critical when the only gave up 16 points. However, not much pressure up front and the secondary struggled, but we knew that would be the case back in March."
Troy Stradford can be heard locally on 850 (AM) WFTL Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and on the Web at www.850wftl.com.

if they did record signals...they should reveal them to the public and to the rest of the league so that the Pats aren't bashed beyond what they should be bashed cause anyone can interpret the worst from this. Or what can happen as well is that they go under-bashed when they should get some serious heat from everyonce, worried about their rep and that in everyone's mind....they aren't worthy of having those championships, etc, etc...

the NY media is reporting that when mangini joined the jets, he warned all players and the front office prior to their first matchup against the jets, that they (pats) steal signals and that they should be on the look out for them. This is the first time they caught them.
So seems like mangini did know about this when in new england.

and i was surprised that green was so efficient. the wides made him look bad.
It's easy to be that efficient when the only thing left open is the 5-7 yard zone. The Skins defense played mainly 3 Deep Zone coverage all game to prevent the quick score and force you all into sustaining drives which they were confident the Fins couldn't do. That's why you could see our corners giving that 7-12 yard cushion (I hate this technique). I felt like I was watching Brunell out there because of all the short completions. The difference is Green was forced into it by the defense. Brunell is forced into it because he can't throw the ball farther than 15 yards. :eee:

He's gutless. The man has some of the best hands in the NFL but he has zero heart. Pisses me off to see him waste his talents. The 2nd INT that Campbell threw was all on Lloyd. He gave up on his route around the 10 yard line before realizing the ball was coming to him and he had to turn it on. Then he made a half hearted effort to catch the ball. And he's supposed to be a great leaper. Then he made no effort to catch the guy after the INT. I read something in an article where Julian Peterson said that Lloyd had the best hands that he has ever seen but he runs terrible routes and can't get any separation to save his life.
I like Reche but I wish we would have signed someone with some size. Like Gabriel.

Steelers' Ward: Pats had help in '02 title game
'They were calling our stuff out. They knew a lot of our calls,' receiver says
Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward suspects the New England Patriots may have had some type of inside information on his team before at least one of the teams’ two AFC championship game matchups since the 2001 season.
Ward is certain the Patriots, while known for the thoroughness of their scouting under coach Bill Belichick, had some kind of unusual help before their 24-17 upset victory in Pittsburgh in the January 2002 AFC championship game. The Patriots went on to win the first of their three Super Bowls.
“Oh, they knew,” Ward said Wednesday. “They were calling our stuff out. They knew, especially that first championship game here at Heinz Field. They knew a lot of our calls. There’s no question some of their players were calling out some of our stuff.”
NFL security officers confiscated a video camera and tape from Patriots video assistant Matt Estrella while he was working on the New York Jets’ sideline during New England’s 38-14 victory on Sunday. The league has confirmed that it is investigating whether the Patriots were taping the Jets’ defensive coaches as they signaled to players on the field.
On Tuesday, Steelers first-year coach Mike Tomlin, who wasn’t around for those AFC championship games, said “when there’s smoke, there’s fire” of widespread suspicion some NFL teams use spying tactics.
The Patriots also beat the Steelers 41-27 in the January 2005 AFC championship game, though that victory was so convincing it would be difficult to pin it on cheating.
Still, Ward said he is disappointed there are allegations that any NFL team may have resorted to spying to gain an edge.
“You would hope that, during their run, when they were winning all their (three) Super Bowls, all that stuff wasn’t going on,” Ward said. “You look back in the past, and we played them in the championship games, and you kind of wonder. It seemed like they were a step ahead of us at all times, but those games are behind us. There’s nothing we can do about it. You just look forward and see what the commissioner (Roger Goodell) will do.”
Ward said any team caught spying should give up high draft picks.
“It’s really hard to say (they should) forfeit games,” Ward said. “Draft picks would hurt a lot of teams; take away their first or second-round pick — that would be a stiff penalty to make sure nobody does it again.”
lmao..that's crazy

Final ruling
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff
Here is the final ruling from the NFL:
# Bill Belichick has been fined $500,000 by the NFL. That is the maximum amount under the NFL Constitution and By-Laws for violating league policy last Sunday on the use of equipment to videotape an opposing team’s offensive or defensive signals.
# The Patriots have been fined $250,000 by the NFL.
# The Patriots will give up their first-round pick in 2008 if they make the playoffs. If they don't make the playoffs, they will surrender their second- and third-round picks.
# Belichick will not be suspended.
“This episode represents a calculated and deliberate attempt to avoid longstanding rules designed to encourage fair play and promote honest competition on the playing field,” Commissioner Roger Goodell wrote in a letter to the Patriots.
"I specifically considered whether to impose a suspension on Coach Belichick," Goodell also wrote. "I have determined not to do so, largely because I believe that the discipline I am imposing of a maximum fine and forfeiture of a first-round draft choice, or multiple draft choices, is in fact more significant and long-lasting, and therefore more effective, than a suspension."

Billick: Jets 'illegally' simulated snap count on Sunday (http://www.encircling.us/go.php?url=http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d80272abd&template=with-video&confirm=true)
i wonder how many of these stories will start surfacing around the nfl.

actually, i think ronnie brown is a decent back. he's just had the bad luck of being on a team with an o-line like swiss cheese...shit, you put LT on the dolphins right now, he won't be doing better than ronnie. the sad part is that ronnie's picking up bad habits because of this. :shame:
case in point, look at the back we sent to the pats (sammy morris)...he did average to below average on our team, but last night ne's o-line made him look a little like LT.
LT's only averaging 2.2 yards a carry behind SD's O-line, I think he'd probably be in the negatives behind yours.

i say your jets will pull off the win. i have absolutely no faith in the lolphins and it's apparent that we're officially in rebuilding mode...with the guise of a team that's ready to compete.
plus, the jets always do well in their own stadium.
battle of the shitty o-lines! :pirate2:
we'll see....it should be a fun game to watch :what:
:suicide2:
Thanks again for Kendall. :eee:
:sad2: ...send him back.....PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the only thing i can say is that boise state (and appalachian state) started the rise of the underdogs in the nfl and college ball.
that is all.

not talking about this season...ronnie's had this shitty line ever since he arrived in the nfl (3 years now).

minor correction.
actually, they've got it at 1.9. Still he's the worst-rated yac running back right now.

That's cause there's no rivalry yet. Once we start to make a threat.......maybe then a rivalry can begin. There's no history in the AFC South. No playoff battles, no playoff implicated battles, no race for divisional lead.......none by a long shot. But...there's no use for me to keep explaining that year after year to you. It won't be until 15 years from now that you'll finally understand. :badmago:
