Dolphins' Porter, Bengals' Jones scuffle (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17687375/)

Updated: 1 hour, 25 minutes ago
Former Pittsburgh Steeler Joey Porter has been cited for misdemeanor battery after he allegedly punched Levi Jones of the Cincinnati Bengals. The Las Vegas Review-Journal reported that Porter and Jones got into a brief fight at a gaming table inside the Palms casino Sunday night.

So far, there has been no response from the Miami Dolphins, who recently signed Porter to a $32 million, multiyear contract.

Rape alleged at home of Seattle's Kerney (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17704198/)

ATLANTA - Police are investigating a woman’s claims she was raped at the home of former Atlanta Falcons defensive end Patrick Kerney.

Kerney, who recently signed with the Seattle Seahawks, was not a suspect in the assault, which reportedly took place early Sunday.

The 29-year-old woman told police she and some friends were at a bar in Atlanta’s trendy Buckhead area and accepted a ride home from three men, Atlanta’s WSB-TV reported Monday. Once back at Kerney’s home, the men were invited inside for drinks.

The woman reportedly told police she fell asleep on a sofa and woke up in a bedroom to find one of the men raping her. The woman said she told the man to stop but he put his thumb on her throat and continued to sexually assault her.

The woman escaped by telling the man she would get a friend to join them. Instead, she ran to the bathroom with a friend, and the man fled with his friends.

In a statement issued Monday, Kerney said an assault had happened at this house while he was asleep. But he said he could not comment further “out of respect for my friend who was assaulted and the police officers who are diligently working to apprehend the offenders.”

Earlier this month, Kerney signed a six-year, $39.5 million contract with the Seahawks after spending his first eight seasons with the Falcons.

If there is any position that absolutely requires consistency of play, its the quarterback. He was not better than 90% of the quarterbacks, 90% of the time. He had nothgin to do with their trip to the superbowl, it was that very good defense that amazingly saved the game, again and again. jeffbownil, let me know in three years who Chicago's quarterback is, cause it wont be Rex if he plays like he did last year."

agreed, but you have to look at this a little differently. For one, to say he fell off or isn't good anymore based on his production at washington, that has very little credibility. Its pretty well known that washington is where pro bowl players go to die. Seriously, i think the stat was they signed like 22 free agents that were pro bowlers the year before they signed them, and only 1 of them made a probowl after.

Lets remember that archuleta was doin pretty damn good when he was on the rams. O, and who was his Defensive coach, yep, Lovie Smith. He's a lovie guy, will play harder for him, knows the system, and lovie knows how to use him.

As far as him being horrible in coverage, i agree. But in a system like ours he will just have to do his assignment. On top of that, he was signed for his run support mainly anyway, and an insurance policy for Mike Brown.

And as I recall it, bears didn't lose the SB because of blown coverage. They tackled horribly, and got ran on. Now we have a veteran that can step in if mike brown goes down with another season ending injury.

Texans reportedly getting Schaub; Carr done? (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17723293/)

Teams have been pursuing Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Schaub for quite some time, but the Falcons have been unwilling to deal him. Now they appear to have changed their minds.

The Houston Texans are close to trading a second-round pick to the Falcons for Schaub, NFL.com reported Wednesday, citing unnamed sources.

The trade could include other compensation when it is finally concluded, NFL.com reported.

The deal will have much greater impact than an average backup quarterback swap. First, the Falcons are putting all their faith in Michael Vick as their quarterback by removing any sense of competition with Schaub.

Second, the Texans seem to be putting heat on current quarterback David Carr by bringing in a competitor.

Third, the NFL draft board is affected because Houston, which picks eighth, probably isn't in the running for LSU quarterback JaMarcus Russell or Notre Dame signal caller Brady Quinn.

Schaub appeared in all 16 games last season for the Falcons but completed just 18 of 27 passes for 208 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. In three NFL seasons, the Virginia quarterback has thrown for 1,033 yards, six TDs and six interceptions.

Well, Ars Technica is reporting that Wendy Seltzer thought that that was over-reaching and posted a video of the notice on YouTube. Predictably, the NFL filed a DMCA Take Down notice on the clip. But Ms. Seltzer knows her rights, so she filed a DMCA Counter Notice. This is when the NFL violated the DMCA, by filing another Take Down notice instead of taking the issue to court — their only legitimate option, according to the DMCA. Report: 'Skins trying to get Bears' Briggs (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17470850/)

The Washington Redskins are trying to make a trade for disgruntled Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs, according to Fox and ESPN on Tuesday.

Briggs' agent D rew Rosenhaus told Fox that the Redskins told him they would exchange their first-round draft pick — No. 6 overall — for Briggs and the Bears' first-round pick (No. 31).

Redskins owner Dan Snyder confirmed to Fox that they are working on such a deal.

ESPN's sources described the same trade possibility.

Rosenhaus told the Chicago Sun-Times that Briggs, a two-time Pro Bowl selection, would sit out the first 10 games and return for the final six to accrue a played season under NFL rules, if he is not traded and remains a designated franchise player.

Briggs met with Bears general manager Jerry Angelo at the hotel where NFL owners are meeting in Phoenix, ESPN reported.

"It was good in the sense that we talked man-to-man," Briggs said. "But not much changed [during the meeting]. But it was good, a positive step, in that we both know where each other stands in this thing."

Briggs later talked with representatives from the Redskins, among other teams, ESPN said.

Rosenhaus told ESPN that it was "a strong likelihood" that the Bears could reach agreement with the Redskins.

"It's a win-win situation," Rosenhaus said. "Chicago only wants to sign Lance to a one-year contract anyway. If they made the trade, they would move up 25 spots in the first round and be able to choose one of the premier players in the draft. And Lance, obviously, would get the long-term deal he wants [from the Redskins]. It's a good resolution for everyone."

Briggs reiterated earlier this month that he would not play another down for the Bears and was ready to sit out next season after they designated him as their franchise player.

“There are a lot of different options, a lot of different decisions, that could happen as the season comes closer,” Briggs told ESPN. “But that’s one of those options.”

That came a day after he told Foxsports.com: “I’ve played my last snap for them. I’ll never play another down for Chicago again.”

Briggs first revealed his feelings last week, when he told ESPN.com the team should remove the label or trade him and then informed a Chicago radio station he would do “everything that’s within my power” to leave the Bears.

The franchise tag guarantees Briggs $7.206 million next season — the average of the top five salaries for players at his position — but it also deters other teams from signing him. The Bears could match any offer for Briggs or receive two No. 1 draft picks. If he sits out next season, the Bears could use the franchise tag again.

A third-round draft pick from Arizona in 2003, Briggs earned $721,600 in the final season of his first NFL contract after he reportedly rejected a six-year, $33 million offer last spring. He told ESPN the deal was for seven years, and he turned it down because it was “below market value.”

Briggs led the team with 117 solo tackles — 24 more than six-time Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Urlacher — and the Bears reached the Super Bowl for the first time since the 1985 team won it all. But it’s been a tumultuous offseason for Chicago.

Running back Thomas Jones was traded to the New York Jets last week. Coach Lovie Smith and Jerry Angelo recently received contract extensions, but Smith’s came after his agent said talks had stalled and that his client would likely leave next season, after his contract expired.

Meanwhile, Briggs and the Bears are locked in a staredown.

Angelo has said he has no plans to trade Briggs. Although a holdout would be expensive, Briggs told Foxsports.com he’ll take out a loan to cover his living expenses next season if necessary.

“The $7.2 million — although it’s a good number, it looks nice — there’s no job security in it,” Briggs told ESPN. “I played four years as a third-round draft pick. I played four years as a third-round draft pick at the league minimum, and there’ve been no talks of a contract negotiation this year. ... In my opinion, there is no intention on a long-term deal here.

“And if you don’t have me in your plans for the long term, then I don’t want to be here.”

I've been reading about this all morning after hearing rumors about it for a couple of weeks and I'm very disappointed in this trade. Briggs is a great young WLB. But it doesn't address the Skins biggest need and that's a young run stuffing 2 gap DT. Right now, LB is an area of strength for the Skins, even before this trade. Washington is a stud. Fletcher is a tackling machine. And we spent a high 2nd rounder on a guy with 1st round talent in Rocky Mckintosh last year. I don't care who your linebackers are, if you don't have the DT's up front to occupy blockers, your LB corps isn't going to be able to do their job. Now, if they were to throw in their 2nd round pick as well, I'd be a little less hesitant about seeing them pull the trigger. Then we'd be able to draft someone like a Tank Tyler in the 1st and pick up a safety or some OL depth in the 2nd.

BRIGGS-TO-'SKINS MAKES NO SENSE

Apart from the fact that Bears linebacker Lance Briggs became a star in a pure Tampa 2 scheme that the Redskins don't run, there's another reason why it makes no sense, in our view, for the 'Skins to add Briggs to the team.

With two big-money free agent linebackers -- Marcus Washington and London Fletcher-Baker -- already in the starting lineup, the 'Skins wouldn't be getting the best return on their investment in Washington, Fletcher-Baker, and Briggs.

Why? Because a defense has three linebackers on the field roughly half of the time.

In the nickel and dime defenses, linebackers are replaced by defensive backs. Teams use the nickel whenever the opponent brings in a third receiver. Typically, that happens in second and long or third and more than three or four yards.

At a time when the 'Skins are still thought to be interested in adding Dre' Bly to a corps of cornerbacks that includes Carlos Rogers and Fred Smoot, it's simply not a good investment of cap dollars to write a big bonus check to Briggs, unless the team is thinking about parting ways with Washington and his base salary of $4 million in 2007.

Meanwhile, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli is once again creating the impression that he broke the story of a possible trade of Briggs to the 'Skins, even though Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com and Adam Schefter of NFL Network had the story well in advance.

(Free advice to Len: With the departure of Michael Irvin and the "reassignment" of Joe Theismann, the folks in Bristol are demonstrating a willingness to heed and to respond to accurate and reasonable external criticism of their employees.)

Trading Up???

Mark Maske spent some time with Joe Gibbs at the owners' meetings in Phoenix and came away with an interesting tidbit or two. We have the story on our site and Maske has it on his blog, so I won't repeat the entire thing, but here's the lede and excerpts:

Washington Redskins Coach Joe Gibbs said today that nothing is "imminent" in a proposed trade with the Chicago Bears for linebacker Lance Briggs, and indicated that the Redskins also are giving serious consideration to trading up in the first-round order in next month's NFL draft.
Gibbs said the Redskins have spoken to two teams about trading up in the draft order. He said the Redskins have a "couple players" in mind if they were to land a top-five selection, and hinted that one of them might be Georgia Tech wide receiver Calvin Johnson.
"I think everybody here would like to have him," Gibbs said.
Gibbs also indicated that while he expects Clinton Portis to remain the Redskins' starter at tailback next season, the workload probably will be divided more evenly between Portis and Ladell Betts than it has been in the past. Betts thrived as the Redskins' primary ballcarrier in the late stages of last season with Portis hurt, and re-signed with the club before becoming a free agent.
"A lot of times it will be kind of in [Portis's] hands, but down the stretch I don't know if anyone played better than Ladell," Gibbs said.
Gibbs said the Redskins will consider that trading for Briggs would give them three highly paid linebackers -- along with Marcus Washington and recent free agent addition London Fletcher -- and possibly cut into the playing time of Rocky McIntosh, a second-round draft pick last year.

NFL suspends Pacman for entire season (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17949870/)

NEW YORK - Adam “Pacman” Jones of Tennessee was suspended for the 2007 season Tuesday and Chris Henry of Cincinnati for eight games — both for numerous violations of the NFL’s personal conduct policy.

“It is a privilege to represent the NFL, not a right,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement announcing the suspensions. “These players and all members of our league have to make the right choices and decisions in their conduct on a consistent basis.”

Jones’ off-field conduct has included 10 incidents where he was interviewed by police. The most recent took place during the NBA All-Star weekend in Las Vegas. Police there recommended felony and misdemeanor charges against Jones after a fight and shooting at a strip club paralyzed one man.

Henry was arrested four times in a 14-month span, resulting in two benchings by coach Marvin Lewis and a two-game league suspension. He was one of nine Bengals arrested in nine months.

Both the Titans and the Bengals said they supported the suspensions.

“While we regret the circumstances that called for it, it’s good for both Chris and the Bengals to have the matter resolved,” said Bengals coach Marvin Lewis. “Our team will move forward, and now it is up to Chris to acquire a more mature understanding of his responsibilities as a player for the Bengals and a representative of the NFL.”

Goodell, who replaced the retired Paul Tagliabue seven months ago, also announced the new, tougher personal conduct policy that will include larger fines and longer suspensions.

Jones, the sixth overall pick in the 2005 draft, starred on the field but had nothing but trouble off it during two seasons with the Titans. He had four touchdowns last season, three on punt returns and one on one of his four interceptions.

He could be reinstated before season’s end if he adheres to a strict set of conditions set by the NFL that include no further involvement with law enforcement; counseling, education and treatment under league and court-ordered programs; follows restrictions on his activities agreed to with the Titans; and a community-service program submitted to the league for review and approval.

“We appreciate the Commissioner’s thoughtful decision today and the discipline plan imposed on Adam Jones,” the Titans said. “We respect this decision and are confident this is in the best interest of the league and the team. We are hopeful that it will achieve the goals of disciplining the player and eventually enabling him to return to the field of play. Our goals for Jones are consistent with the league’s in that regard.”

Jones’ attorney, Manny Arora of Atlanta, was in a meeting and did not immediately return a message left by the Associated Press.

Teams can lose draft picks in new policy (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18040352/)

NEW YORK - Roger Goodell calls it “the shield,” and he wears it proudly.

He defended the NFL shield as powerfully as any commissioner can Tuesday by suspending Adam “Pacman” Jones for a season and Chris Henry for eight games, while also strengthening the league’s player conduct policy.

Goodell has spent his adult life as an NFL employee, from a part-time helper to one of the most influential jobs in sports. He succeeded Paul Tagliabue last summer, and his actions Tuesday show he intends to meet the most difficult challenges head-on.

“It is important that the NFL be represented consistently by outstanding people as well as great football players, coaches, and staff,” Goodell said. “We hold ourselves to higher standards of responsible conduct because of what it means to be part of the National Football League. We have long had policies and programs designed to encourage responsible behavior, and this policy is a further step in ensuring that everyone who is part of the NFL meets that standard.”

Far too many players weren’t coming close to that standard, embarrassing themselves and the league. So Goodell has been proactive from the outset, making himself available for consultations with players and team officials, even offering any help he could provide to the Cincinnati Bengals. Nine Bengals players were arrested in the past year. One of them, Odell Thurman, was suspended for all of last season.

Tagliabue had a lawyer’s background and was wary to act before the legal process ran its course. Goodell already has been extremely assertive on the main issue of his early tenure. He pretty much explained why in the new conduct policy, which says:

“Illegal or irresponsible conduct does more than simply tarnish the offender. It puts innocent people at risk, sullies the reputation of others involved in the game, and undermines public respect and support for the NFL.

“While criminal activity is clearly outside the scope of permissible conduct, and persons who engage in criminal activity will be subject to discipline, the standard of conduct for persons employed in the NFL is considerably higher. It is not enough simply to avoid being found guilty of a crime. Instead, as an employee of the NFL or a member club, you are held to a higher standard and expected to conduct yourself in a way that is responsible, promotes the values upon which the league is based, and is lawful.

“Persons who fail to live up to this standard of conduct are guilty of conduct detrimental and subject to discipline, even where the conduct itself does not result in conviction of a crime.”

While Goodell isn’t likely to be universally praised for his tough stand — lawyers could be lining up right now to sue the league — it’s a position he couldn’t avoid. And when he was encouraged by the NFL Players Association to get tough, well, he got very tough, although Jones can apply for reinstatement after 10 games next season.

Goodell, who several times referred to “the shield” when mentioning the NFL at the league meetings last month, has consulted extensively with NFLPA executive director Gene Upshaw. He also created a six-man player advisory committee to discuss conduct, discipline and other topics. Unlike Tagliabue, Goodell has had a visible presence among the players and coaches, which might be why so many of them supported his announcements Tuesday.

“The message, I think, is that the league office is very, very serious about conduct in the league and that it’s important for us,” said Tony Dungy, coach of the Super Bowl champion Colts. “I think it’s a good message to send to everyone, not just the players but everyone around the team, and I don’t think it’s directed solely at our players, but also to our fans and what we’re concerned about.”

Even Henry’s teammates in Cincinnati backed the get-tough approach. Not that they had much choice considering all those player arrests.

“It should definitely make a difference,” Bengals safety Madieu Williams said “Obviously over the past couple of months, a lot of guys around the league have been getting into trouble. His main goal is to protect the (NFL) shield, so to speak. With the new rule being put into effect, it should alleviate some of the players getting into trouble.”

As should Goodell’s other major adjustment of the policy: NFL teams will be responsible for the conduct of their employees, and will be subject to discipline for any transgressions. That is a big departure from the policy of previous years.

“It will put ownership on the players to watch their conduct on and off the field,” Williams added. “Also, there’s an incentive on the team. The team would put more emphasis on the type of guys they bring into the locker room. As a whole, it puts pressure on both the player and the team, which is good.”

And exactly what Goodell wants.

Homie ain't playing :what:

Urlacher fined $100,000 for Super Bowl hat (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18180024/)

NEW YORK - Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher was fined $100,000 by the NFL for wearing a cap during Super Bowl media day that promoted a sponsor not authorized by the league.

NFL rules prohibit gear that advertises any product but a designated sponsor, league spokesman Brian McCarthy said Wednesday.

Urlacher was fined for drinking vitaminwater and wearing a vitaminwater hat during the media session in Miami leading to the title game. Gatorade is the NFL’s official drink.

McCarthy said this is the first time such a fine has been levied. He added that $100,000 is the standard fine for such a violation at the Super Bowl. A violation during the regular season is $10,000. It is $50,000 at the Pro Bowl.

The fine recalls an episode involving Chicago quarterback Jim McMahon in the playoffs following the 1985 season, the previous time the Bears made the Super Bowl.

McMahon wore a headband that said “adidas” in a playoff game against the New York Giants, and then-commissioner Pete Rozelle fined him $5,000 because the shoe company was not an NFL sponsor. The following week, in the NFC title game against the Los Angeles Rams, McMahon wore a headband that read “rozelle.”

That's pathetic. Maybe Urlacher likes Vitaminwater and thinks Gatorade is piss. Similarly, why can't McMahon wear Adidas products. In soccer, you wear whatever boots you want. The bottles that drinks come in are sponsored by Lucozade but they don't have to CONTAIN Lucozade. The league can't, or at least shouldn't be able to, tell people what they prefer.

Here's waiting for Urlacher's "Gaytorade" cap.

The following week, in the NFC title game against the Los Angeles Rams, McMahon wore a headband that read “rozelle.”

that's friggin' stoopid.

on the brighter note, Ex-Hokie Vick donates $10K to assist victim's families (http://www.sportsline.com/nfl/story/10136054)

CBS SportsLine.com wire reports

ATLANTA -- Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick has teamed up with the United Way to donate $10,000 to assist families affected by the massacre at Virginia Tech, his former school.

"When tragic things like this happen, families have enough to deal with, and if I can help in some small way, that's the least I can do," said Vick, who played for the Hokies before being drafted No. 1 overall by the Falcons in 2001.

The Vick Foundation is collecting donations from local communities in both Atlanta and Virginia that will be placed in the United In Caring Fund for Victims of the VA Tech Tragedy and the special fund at the United Way of Montgomery, Radford and Floyd counties, which serves the Virginia Tech area.

Vick's foundation said the money will be used to provide help with funeral expenses, transportation for family members and other support services.

Ditka skips speaking fee, aids paralyzed teen (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18229121/)

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - So much for the gruff, sideline-ranting “Iron Mike” image.

Former Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka waived a speaking fee that can fetch up to $30,000, then wrote a $5,000 check Wednesday to help a teen paralyzed from the neck down after a collision in a high school football game last September.

The NFL Hall of Famer penned the check quietly as he boarded a flight after speaking to about 250 people who attended a $100-a-plate fundraiser for 17-year-old Travis Hearn of Rock Island.

“The gesture at the end of the night is typical of the man,” said Rock Island football coach Vic Boblett, an organizer of the fundraiser. “That Coach Ditka did it where he did proves he doesn’t need to make a scene with his generosity.”

Ditka didn’t even mind getting upstaged when Hearn wheeled into the coach’s news conference, which was halted by a nearly minute-long ovation as the high school junior made his first public appearance since the accident.

“You never lose in life until you stop trying and he will tell you the same thing,” Ditka said when the applause died down. “He was trying to make a play, something happened. The good thing is you people are helping.”

Hearn told reporters an outpouring of community support has netted tens of thousands of dollars. He also said a specially equipped house that will soon be built by Habitat for Humanity “feels good.”

“Sometimes, it’s overwhelming,” Hearn said. “I’m just like, ’Wow.’ The whole community has jumped on my back and helped.”

Rams Acquire Dante Hall From Chiefs (http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/F/FBN_RAMS_CHIEFS_TRADE?SITE=1010WINS&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT)

By JIM SALTER
Associated Press Writer

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- The St. Louis Rams' long search for a return man ended Wednesday when the team acquired Dante Hall from Kansas City in exchange for a fifth-round pick in this weekend's draft.

"We have filled a need with one of the top players in football at his specialty, returning punts and kicks," Rams coach Scott Linehan said. "Dante will fit nicely on our special teams and can be utilized as a receiver in certain situations."

The trade could have draft-day implications. The Rams had expressed strong interest in Ohio State's Ted Ginn Jr., as much for his return ability as for his resume as a receiver. St. Louis also has several needs on defense.

As part of the trade, the teams swapped positions in the third round - the Chiefs moving up to 82nd overall, the Rams down to 84th.

"We have to get younger, and the only way you can do that is through the draft," Chiefs coach Herm Edwards said. "You're going to have to give up something to get something."

The trade also gives Kansas City seven draft choices.

"We feel that it's always important to have at least seven draft picks," Chiefs president Carl Peterson said. "Hopefully, we'll be able to acquire another one or two in the days to come."

The Rams have struggled for years on kick returns. Last season, St. Louis averaged 7.8 yards per punt return. Only five teams were worse. The Rams were 26th in kickoff returns, averaging 21.3 yards.

The 28-year-old Hall has returned 11 kickoffs and punts for touchdowns in his seven-year career, including four (two kickoffs, two punts) in 2003. Brian Mitchell holds the record with 14 kick-return touchdowns, followed by Eric Metcalf with 12.

Hall also needs one more kickoff return for a touchdown to break the record of six he shares with Ollie Matson, Gale Sayers, Travis Williams and Mel Gray.

Hall was the NFL's top returner from 2002-2004. His production declined the last two season, though he had one punt return for a touchdown last season, on Oct. 1 against San Francisco.

In 2003, he averaged 25.9 yards per kickoff return and 16.3 yards per punt return.

Last season, Hall averaged 22.8 yards on 53 kickoff returns and 8.9 yards on 27 punt returns. He also caught 26 passes, two for touchdowns.

For his career, all of it with Kansas City, Hall averaged 24 yards per kickoff return and 10 yards per punt return.
