Vilma is kind of on the small side for your typical 3-4 ILB. Those guys are usually +255 lbs. The Jets would need a massive space eater on the DL to compensate for it. It's the same reason Ray Lewis looked mortal 2 years ago. Then they go and draft Ngata and he's back to being an All-World LB.

Like I said. You need a massive space eater to make them viable in the 3-4 base defense. Casey Hampton fits the mold at NT. They also have big DE's rather than tweeners. Otherwise you would see their LB's get swallowed up by the guards.

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/football/pro/dolphins/sfl-spdolphins07mar07,0,1904457.story?coll=sfla-dolphins-front

Porter is only the second player in NFL history other than Clay Matthews (69.5 sacks and 16 interceptions from 1978-96) to have at least 60 sacks and 10 picks.

But Porter, who is known as one of the NFL's biggest trash-talkers, seemed to suffer from post-Super Bowl syndrome as his numbers dropped in 2006 as did the 8-8 Steelers.

In 14 games, Porter posted 55 tackles -- his lowest total since his rookie season in 1999 -- with seven sacks and two interceptions. Two of those sacks and a game-clinching interception came against the Dolphins in Pittsburgh's season-opening 28-17 victory.

The Steelers said releasing Porter was strictly a salary-cap decision as he was due a $1 million roster bonus Tuesday and $4 million base salary in 2007.

Porter was involved in some controversial incidents both on and off the field in 2006. In September, Porter was fined after his dogs killed a neighbor's miniature pony. Porter was fined $15,000 by the NFL for allegedly threatening an official during an Oct. 29 loss to the Raiders. Two months later, he was fined another $10,000 by the league for calling Browns tight end Kellen Winslow a derogatory name for a homosexual during a post-game interview.

"I love to be around passionate people. He's a passionate player," former Steelers coach Bill Cowher once said of Porter. "Sometimes, does it get him in trouble? Probably.

Who's your starter opposite of Will Allen? Will Allen starting is enough to make anyone cringe. He's atrocious in man coverage. I hated seeing the Giants let him go because I knew with him in their secondary that Moss would have big games against them.

I still think your biggest needs are youth on defense and a couple of upgrades on the OL. A stud WR would go a long ways towards helping Culpepper and Brown out as well forcing defenses to respect the deep ball.

I agree somewhat. Lining him up as a DL would just invite people to run all over them. They already have 2 undersized DE's in Taylor and Roth. Having him line up as a down linemen in a 4-3 Over would prevent Porter from doing the things that he is good at and would be suicide for the D. Like you said, he's better in coverage.

yeah, i've been saying that they needed to overhaul the secondary and ol for years now, but nick saban was smoking crack or something because nothing was ever done. hopefully the new coach will get the ball rolling and actually accomplish something in those departments.

the only way i give him a chance to prove himself is with a new o-line. if we keep the same guys, i say it's better to ship him off. he'll only wind up getting injured again.

harrington managed to stay alive because he was pretty mobile..too bad he was pretty mediocre as well. not bad for a backup though.

even post-injury Culpepper is still pretty mobile. OK, so he's no Michael Vick, but he's not Kerry Collins in the pocket by any means. Harrington's future has to lie as a backup, but with him released, if Culpepper isn't fit, doesn't that mean that Cleo Lemon is back in? If so, then I'd find that panic button.

New England, Buffalo, Miami, and NYJ are older rivals while the Colts were brought in the 1980 to the AFC East so they didn't have the history or the rivalry... Tennessee or Houston was the odd man out of the north along with Expansion Jacksonville because the NFL wanted to keep the Cleveland, Cincy, Pittsburgh rivalry.. and since old Cleveland went to Baltimore..they stayed in the division... Houston was expansion team and the south needed the extra team..

Steelers are looking at DE Anthony Spencer for their first round draft pick.. looks like they are planning on going to a 4-3 here soon.. the guy is undersized for a 3-4... although he could slim down to make a decent OLB..

also a note, they might try to trade down with the Giants to get this guy

McGahee should be better than Lewis for the Bills but not three draft picks worth though. And Joe Horn and the Falcs will be interesting -- all dependent on Vick's performance or lack thereof.

Texans are talking trade with the Skins. They want to move up should Quinn fall to #6 and the word is there is a deal already in place with the Skins to swap first rounders and give us their 2nd rounder. I would love for this to work out. That would give us the chance to still draft the guy we wanted at #6 (Branch or Anderson) and pick up a LB or DB in round 2. :fingerscrossed:

I put more of it on Carr than the OL. Carr is exactly like Patrick Ramsey was for us. He holds onto the ball trying to make plays with his arm rather than getting rid of it and ends up taking the sack. He has awful pocket presence.

i think it's both..the lack of OL gives Carr less time than a normal qb to find open receivers... he runs around trying to make plays because hi knows he has no line.. and he makes big mistakes.. give him a line for christ sakes and maybe he'll develop..

Briggs: 'I've played my last snap' for Bears (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17470850/)

MSNBC News Services
Updated: 1 hour, 3 minutes ago
LAKE FOREST, Ill. - Pro Bowl linebacker Lance Briggs repeated Monday that he refuses to play any longer for the Chicago Bears, Fox reported.

"I am now prepared to sit out the year if the Bears don't trade me or release me," Briggs told Fox. "I've played my last snap for them. I'll never play another down for Chicago again.

"People think I can't afford to sit out the year -- I can take out loans to get me through that year just fine because eventually I'll have a deal somewhere," Briggs added. "There are things I can do to make sure I'm fine financially if I sit out. I can also decide what other course of action I can take as the season gets closer. The Bears have shown I'm not in their long-term plans so if that's the case, I don't want to be here."

Earlier, Briggs said he wanted out of Chicago, saying the Bears should remove his franchise player tag or trade him.

But general manager Jerry Angelo said the Bears are expecting him to play with them this season, with a one-year, $7.2 million deal, the average of the top five salaries at his position.

“We have his rights, so he’s on our football team,” Angelo said Tuesday during a conference call to discuss the trade of leading rusher Thomas Jones to the New York Jets.

“We feel that we’re treating him very good. That’s a lot of money he’s making on a one year-deal. The strain really comes to us in terms of our cap and what we have to do for a one-year deal.”

Angelo said he had no calls about Briggs from other teams.

“Most of the times when you franchise a player they don’t get traded,” Angelo said. “We will always listen to anything that we feel will be in our best interest. But when we did this, it was with the intent for him to be a Bear this year.”

Briggs and the team could not come to agreement on a contract extension last spring — reports says he turned down a six-year, $33 million deal.

Briggs said that money isn't the only issue involved. He wants to be considered the Bears' leader, not teammate Brian Urlacher.

"I've talked to Brian about it," Briggs told Fox. "I'm a competitor and I want the same thing he has. I've learned a lot from Brian as a player and a leader and I eventually want to be 'the man' somewhere. I want to be like him and have everything put on me too. Obviously I'll never be able to do that there.

"Still, had the Bears made me a long-term offer that I found acceptable, I probably would have sacrificed this desire and stayed. I don't want to be somewhere I'm not wanted long-term."

Briggs has made his unhappiness known in a couple of interviews, one with ESPN.com and another with a Chicago radio station in which said “I’ll do everything that’s within my power to not be with this organization.”

“What it really comes down to it’s not about the money. It’s about you’ve played long enough and you think you’ve earned a certain position on the team that you would be here for a long time.”

Briggs said the Bears have no intention now of working out a long-term deal to keep him.

“We did go to Lance in the spring to try to do a long-term deal. So that was our intent as it has been with other players that we had under contract before their contracts expired,” Angelo said.

“We gave it what we feel are our very best efforts. We thought we put a very good deal on the table. And we also told them that the option of the franchise tag was there and they decided to pass the deal up and play it out. We certainly have to respect that. And we also told them that we were going to move on.”

Briggs, who’s been selected to two Pro Bowls, just completed his fourth season with the Bears and was a third-round draft choice out of Arizona in 2003.

Briggs made $721,600 last season when he led the Bears with 117 solo tackles.

You make a great point. Hell...now, things would still have been iffy if he were offered a high dollar figured extension cause now it's not only the money he wants, but the position...the honor that comes with being the "main man" in the defense. He doesn't want anyone else basking in glory for the efforts he made, as he claims Urlacher does now. They should have given him that extension LAST YEAR and none of this would be going on.

exactly what i was gonna say. He was offered a multi-year deal worth about 7-8mil per year (which is what he's getting as a franchised player this year). He turned that down, he really wanted to get the max dollar possible, well him and Drew Rosenhaus that is. My point is that they knew they weren't going to be able to keep him. So deal him. Franchising a player is the kiss of death between the organization and a player. And it disrupts the chemistry of the team. Prior to the start of FA teams were drooling over the prospect of getting him. But by pushing it this far they are reduced his value. Teams know they won't have to give up as much as they would have before because they know the Bears are up against the wall now. The best thing they can do now is a sign and trade. Probably with someone like Jacksonville or the Niners who who both have a very big interest in him.

Moss for Briggs, do it!!!!!!!!

I don't see why briggs is so upset. I understand why he is, but then again, it doesn't seem relevant. He wants a long term deal, ok, i understand that. But long term doesn't mean much because contracts are not guaranteed. So then it really comes down to "guaranteed money" aka signing bonus. And he was looking to get like a 15mil signing bonus. Now the bears franchise him and he gets 7.5. Now if we franchise him next year he'll get slightly more. That would equate to the 15mil signing bonus he was looking for. So he'd basically see the same amount of money over the next few years either way. And if he doesn't get franchised next year, he would be free to seek a new long term deal elsewhere. He's young, he's not gonna lose value over the course of another season, if anything only grow in value.

I think the real problem began when he saw what free agents were getting, specifically the 8yr 80mil deal that clements got.

Seeing a lot of talk about the Fins moving up to the #5/6 spots the last few days if Calvin Johnson is still available. Much of that is predicated on what the Raiders do. If they keep Moss, then they probably draft Russell. If they move Moss then they probably take CJ though I have no idea who is going to get him the ball. Maybe Aaron Rodgers? The #5 and 6 spots are a hot commodity right now. You can thank the Browns and Brady Quinn for that. Everyone was under the assumption that the Browns would take Peterson. But will they still take him after signing Jamal Lewis? Quinn was lights out in his pro-day workout. The Bills and Texans both have the ammunition to move up should Peterson, Jackson, or Quinn fall that far. NE was another potential trade partner till they signed Washington and Stallworth. It should turn out to be a pretty entertaining draft this year.

I think there are a lot of teams that would make briggs their highest paid LB. But in chicago, he's playing next to Urlacher. The bears cannot commit 15-20mil on 2 players at the same position, LB.

Its the same situation Thomas Jones was in. He was worth a hell of a lot more than what he was getting paid. But with 16-18mil committed to benson, theres no way they could commit anymore money to the RB positions.

When you have a defense that good all you need is a QB that will manage the game and not lose it for you. Trust your ground game and make intelligent reads. Grossman does neither.

em. that's what i just said. you need an good offense and a good defense. :jazzrage:

I think the best foundation for a team is both the O-line and D-Line. When those do a hell of a job....it makes it easier on the other guys. Your chances of getting a decent to good QB increase that much and it trickles on from there. On the opposite side of the ball, the D-Lineman make the LBs better and they allow the DBs to cover more effectively.

:agree: ...the Jets OL will be a lot better this season, so expect big offensive numbers from them, especially now that they have a rb :nanner24: !!

In hindsight...that Cedric Benson pick wasn't the most prudent one. It's costed them in the shorter run and hopefully, for their sake...it doesn't cost them further. I'd take T.J. over C.B. any day, currently.

Tiki hands? The guy fumbled two times so far since he's been in the nfl. I wouldn't say he has tiki hands at all, lol. And he's gotten injured a couple times, I think its more unfortunate than he's injury prone. He was never hurt during his 4 years at texas where he carried the ball a hell of a lot.

The Benson and the real Adrian Peterson will get the job done.

i'm sure CB has the talent, i just don't think he has the leadership skills Jones had and that can be bad, rumors were that he didn't get along with some of the players or something like that, so it will be interested to see how his season goes down...

well if you say grossman didn't have a full year under his belt to show what he could do until this year, why don't you lend that same leniancy to CB? He hasn't been a starter, he started like 1 game. He hasn't been able to get the majority of carries and really get into the flow of the game, and really gel with that OL.

And i don't think he wasn't injured at texas.

Freshman year - played in 12 games, started 7, had 240 touches, missed holiday bowl due to pinched nerve.

Soph - started all 13 games, 326 touches

Jr. - played in 12 games, 11 starts, 267 touches

Sr. - started all 12 games, over 1800yds.

Benson should get 1500 yds this year.

Mago - you're right he's not a leader. But we have enough leaders on the team. Also, he gets along fine with the team though, don't believe that hype too much.

No doubt...we can't really say much about C.B. since he hasn't been the starter until now. I'll be holding complete judgement on him until after this season and next.

Benson is the kind of runner that needs 25 touches a game. Those 3-4 yard gains at the start of the game will start to turn into big gains in the 4th quarter.

I woudln't worry about Tank. He's got enough dough to get all the commissary needed to keep the weight up on top of being able to work out. He's got nothing else to do in there. I say he's out in much less than four months. At most, he'll do three.

i think he has to do the 4 months in full. I could be mistaken, but I thought that if you receive jail time of less than 1 year, you must do the full time. Thats why you see celebrities get 1yr and 1day sentences, so then they're eligible to get out early.
