And just to stir up some free agent talks, here are some rumours I've come across:

Thornton to be traded by Boston, they know they will lose him next year... might as well get something for him now. Florida, Toronto & Detroit seem to have the most interest. Boston would want Bouwmeester as part of the package Florida would have to offer, apparently.

Thorton to Toronto? :eek2: Thorton to Florida? I didn't know your powers extended to hockey trades jazz. :jazz: Thorton to Detriot? Yes please! Get him out of my conference, and make :rob: happy!

Same thing for Samsonov, who might be going to Chicago.
Detroit might be interested, and Samsonov's wife is from DET... but they might not have the $$ to sign him.

I'm starting to love the salary cap. It's nice to be able to read "Det...might not have the $$ to sign him"

Satan likely to be bought out

Well, at least God's finally making a decent offer now.

Curtis Joseph could end up in STL.

They do love goalies that just can't quite get it done...

I'll post some more before August 1st, when the buying out period begins.

Trizzak

Rule changes agreed on:

-- Allowing the two-line pass (no red line) like international hockey;

-- Reduction in size of goalie equipment;

-- Using the AHL crease and limits on goaltender puck handling;

-- No tie games; using a penalty shootout after overtime;

-- Move nets back two feet towards end boards.

Edit: for clarity

DETROIT NEWS: Ted Kulfan reported that potential buyout candidates for the Wings include Derian Hatcher, Ray Whitney and Darren McCarty, with the savings to go toward re-signing Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg. The Legion is Doomed!

Philly is the first to announce bought out players, John Leclair and Tony Amonte. Leclair was due $6.84 million while Amonte was due $4.26 million.

Sources tell Sportsnet the Florida Panthers missed the signing deadline by three minutes this afternoon following a flurry of back and forth negotiations between Panthers GM Mike Keenan and Roussin's agent, Pat Brisson.

The two sides had agreed on an entry level agreement just prior to the deadline and believed a fax delivered by Florida at 5pm (et) would register in Montreal in time.

It didn't, and the NHL deemed the deal invalid, which leaves Roussin free to any team on Saturday.
For those that don't know, Roussin was Crosby's linemate last year, and his offensive numbers were tremendous.

the only thing about the deal that i like (other than bringing a wealth of knowledge to our younger players) is that they came together as a package. they should do great as a tandem.

Keenan: Panthers not through dealing

Thursday, August 04, 2005

The Panthers have been one of the busiest teams in the early days of the NHL's free-agent market. And they're not done shopping yet.

General Manager Mike Keenan said Wednesday he'd like to add at least one scorer to the four free agents he has signed, a haul that matches Boston and Philadelphia for the most signees since the signing period started Monday.

"Of course, as soon as you say that, the agents who (have) those players know it's one of your priorities," he scoring. "So let's just say scoring is a premium we would try to seek out."

Despite the fact five Eastern Conference teams — New Jersey, Buffalo, Washington, Tampa Bay and Toronto — had made no moves as of late Wednesday, the Panthers' payroll ranked only 12th in the East at $10.3 million, ahead of only Boston ($7.8 million), Buffalo ($7.6 million) and Washington ($7.1 million).

That's because the total outlay of the four players Keenan has signed — forwards Joe Nieuwendyk, Gary Roberts and Martin Gelinas and defenseman Joel Kwiatkowski — is less than $6.5 million.

Even with 10 restricted free agents to sign, including Roberto Luongo and Olli Jokinen, Keenan has some wiggle room left in his budget. Among the attractive forwards still on the board late Wednesday were Peter Forsberg, Alexander Mogilny, Zigmund Palffy, John LeClair, Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne.

Keenan seems unlikely to make any more moves on defense after losing out on Chris Pronger, who was traded by St. Louis to Edmonton on Wednesday.

"We definitely made a play for him, but we couldn't satisfy the needs of the Blues, so they turned to their other choices," said Keenan, who added that Jay Bouwmeester was "not involved in the package at all" despite the fact the Blues ended up with Edmonton's top young defenseman in Eric Brewer.

(good move, i wouldn't give up jay either...not even for pronger)

"We had come to an agreement in terms of compensation," Keenan said, "but couldn't get the trade done."

Keenan expressed surprise at the size of some of the deals, which included Pittsburgh's five-year, $25 million package for defenseman Sergei Gonchar, Montreal's four-year, $18 million contract for winger Alexei Kovalev and Vancouver's three-year, $18 million deal for center Markus Naslund.

"As it's unfolding we're all students of the process," Keenan said. "It's going to be interesting. I think you're going to see teams getting to their caps with some of their middle-range guys unsigned, and those guys are going to have to take a lower number."

There have been few trades as yet, which Keenan said won't happen until the attractive unrestricted free agents are gone and decisions are made regarding restricted free agents.

"Once that settles out you'll get a mix of switching pieces to make for a better winning formula for your team," he said.

Still, Keenan went into the process with a stated goal of adding leadership and experience, and is satisfied he has achieved that.

"A very important part of being successful in this league is having quality individuals who have had some success, and have the ability to help us develop and lead younger players," he said. "We have addressed that and will continue to do so."

Crosby's trainer hired: Andy O'Brien, 27, who has spent the past four years working as the personal trainer of Sidney Crosby, the No. 1 overall draft pick by the Pittsburgh Penguins, has been hired by the Panthers as their strength and conditioning coach.

Detroit Red Wings re-sign veteran defencemen Chris Chelios and Mathieu Schneider

DETROIT (CP) - The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed defenceman Chris Chelios to a one-year contract and re-signed Mathieu Schneider to a two-year deal.

Detroit also signed Swedish forward Johan Franzen to a one-year contract. Chelios, 43, returns to the Wings for his 22nd season in the NHL and seventh with the Red Wings. The three-time winner of the Norris Trophy as the top defenceman in the NHL ranks 24th among active players in points with 914.

"Chris brings a great deal of experience and passion to the rink every day," Red Wings GM Ken Holland said in a release. "He's been a great Red Wing, he's in excellent shape, and no matter what his age, you know he can play at a very high level."

Schneider, 36, is entering his third year with Detroit and 17th in the NHL. The five-foot-10, 192-pounder was Detroit's leading producer from the blue-line in 2003-04 with 14 goals and 32 assists in 78 games.

"With Mathieu and Chris, I feel very good about our defence for this season," Holland said. "Mathieu had a great year for us in '03-04 and we tried to sign him last summer."

Franzen, 25, was Detroit's third-round selection (97th overall) in last year's entry draft. The six-foot-two, 210-pound forward had seven goals and seven assists in 43 games with the Swedish Elite League's Linkoping last winter.

From the Edmonton Sun:

"RUMOURS DU JOUR: There are fewer faces left on the unrestricted free-agent map, but a handful may still be on the Oilers' wishlist. Chris Gratton, who was bought out by Colorado, would give the Oilers some size up front. Mark Messier is still up for grabs and Eric Lindros is reportedly weighing offers from Edmonton, Toronto, Florida and Nashville."

obviously the concensus around the Detroit higher-ups is that we've had our share of Cups in the last decade and it's time we start looking to get higher first round draft picks.

Look at Philly! They signed Forsberg and that put them over the cap.

They traded players accordingly to make it fit.

They were in the same situation as the Leafs, maybe slightly better.

And jazz, Lindros could come at a bargain price. Despite being an asshole and being one hit away from becoming a vegetable, the man can play. But in the end, I think he's Toronto bound

Red Wings GM Ken Holland is trying to sign restricted free agents Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg, but says the sides are still far apart.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Datsyuk is asking for at least $4 million, and Zetterberg $2.5 million.

Datsyuk's agent, Gary Greenstin, said he and Holland have discussed numbers, and he stressed that his client is a hot commodity on the market. If the Wings can't pay up, Datsyuk could stay in Russia.

"We have had a very productive conversation," Greenstin told the Free Press.

"We've explained our position, he has explained his position. He has a certain amount of money to spend and has to sign another player. Pavel, you know, Pavel Datsyuk's future is with the Detroit Red Wings."
After signing defensemen Mathieu Schneider and Chris Chelios, the paper claims the Wings have about $10 million left to sign Datsyuk, Zetterberg, defenseman Niklas Kronwall, a goaltender, another defenseman and a few third and fourth liners.

Asked if he sees a scenario in which he ends up without Datsyuk or Zetterberg, Holland said, "Anything is possible."

Reports out of Toronto suggest the Maple Leafs have inquired about acquiring Zetterberg.

Just fucking do it dammit.

"Preds pounce on Kariya with two-year deal

By Teresa M. Walker, The Associated Press
NASHVILLE — The Nashville Predators fought for a fair labor deal for small market teams to help them compete in the NHL. They followed through Friday with the biggest signing in the expansion franchise's short history.
Paul Kariya signed a two-year, $9 million deal with the Nashville Predators. It's the left winger's third team in three seasons, and for Nashville he offers the biggest scoring threat yet.

"This is a day we've been waiting for for a long time for this franchise," general manager David Poile said.

"He had a lot of places to go. The fact (is) he chose Nashville, and I think in some regards that's got to be somewhat of a stunner that he chose here instead of going to some other bigger market where he could get more fanfare."

The 30-year-old forward spent his first seven NHL seasons with Anaheim, helping the Mighty Ducks reach the Stanley Cup finals in 2003. Then he joined up with former teammate Teemu Selanne, and the pair signed free-agent deals with Colorado for the 2003-04 season.

He said he chose Nashville because the Predators started courting him the instant free agency opened.

"They showed a commitment to me that I was the guy they wanted to bring to Nashville, and I was very excited about their hockey club," Kariya said by telephone.

"I think it's a great young hockey club that's only going to get better. I'm really excited about the speed and the goaltending. With the new rules changes coming, I think it's only going to benefit Nashville."

Predators owner Craig Leipold was on the league's executive committee, which negotiated the new collective bargaining agreement with the $39 million salary cap that ended the season-long lockout.

"This is exactly what we dreamed about when we talked about the new CBA and being on a more level playing field," Poile said. "We've seen that already to a certain extent in the free agency period ... The dollars are more evenly spread. These guys now are at least attracted to our markets."

Nashville capped its sixth season in April 2004 with a franchise-best 91 points and its first playoff berth before losing to Detroit in six games. The Predators have largely kept that roster intact, including goaltender Tomas Vokoun who tied for third in the NHL with 34 victories that season.

Kariya said he thinks the Predators have one of the fastest teams in the NHL.

"They have great goaltending, great work ethic, and if they lacked anything, it was some scoring punch up front. I looked at that as a big role I could fill, and I was really excited to come here and do that," Kariya said.

At Colorado, Kariya had career lows with 11 goals and 36 points in an injury-plagued season that limited him to just 51 games.

Kariya missed 31 of the first 38 games because of a sprained wrist, and got into only one playoff game after he sprained his ankle in the Avalanche's last game of the regular season. But he said the lockout, while unwanted, has helped him heal up completely.

"It gave my body a chance to rest and recover from all the injuries accumulated over the years. I'm 100% now. This is the best I've felt," he said.

In 10 NHL seasons, Kariya has 311 goals and 705 points in 657 games. Kariya, a seven-time All-Star, has recorded over 100 points twice, gone over 30 goals six times, and has averaged 1.073 points per game for his career.

"This is a place where you can win, and I think it's what the league wants and that's what they got," Kariya said. "

Lindros might not be heading to Toronto. The Leafs signed Jason Allison, and he is also "damaged goods."

It would be quite risky to have two players on the team that are one hit away from not being able to play anymore...

But also to consider is what they can accomplish if they do stay healthy.

Quite the conundrum, and one that I don't give a shit about. GO HABS GO!
