ok, i currently have bellsouth dsl coming through an alcatel speed touch home modem which is being fed through a linksys etherfast cable/dsl 4-port switch router. my wife's computer feeds off of it, as well as my computer and xbox live/ps2 online.

now, i want to be able to walk around with my laptop wirelessly around the house. what's the easiest way to accomplish this? i don't see the point of putting a wireless nic card in my desktop since it's like right next to the modem and i want to be able to play xbox live/ps2 online whenever the feeling hits me. what are my options?

- I'm not too familiar with wireless stuff but I had my friend read your situation....

- My friend says that you need to buy a wireless nic card --> http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=36&prid=611
for your laptop and then buy a wireless router --> http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=35&prid=610 ...

There are also USB adapters for computers to receive the signal.

by a wireless router, but plug in the router to your computer and anything else that's close enough.. and get a wireless nic for your laptop. you don't have to have a wireless nic for your desktop if you don't want to. you can plug it in like a regular router too.

yeah, i ordered my laptop with a wireless card inside of it already...so, the wireless routers also let you hook into it with a regular nic card? in that case i'll just get a linksys wireless, hook everything else up to it as usual and let my laptop pick up the wireless signal.

how would you set up the laptop to pick up the signal though?

- The nic card should automatically detect the signal...I think.

- What type of nic do you have in your laptop? Is it an 802.11B or an 802.11G?

as soon as i have the chance to check, i'll let you know. i think it's a B.

- Well...basically if you have a B nic card then just go with 802.11B wireless router. And vise versa.

gotcha. but did you ask your friend if i could plug into it like a normal router for the stuff i don't want to use wirelessly (xbox, my desktop pc, etc.,)?

Keith Moon
July 8th, 2005, 04:16 PM
- Yeah, as long as you have the same ethernet inputs on the back of the router...

jazz

damn, i should have gotten the wireless one when i decided to buy a router.

- I'm still not sold on the whole wireless thing, but that's just me. But I'm sure I'd want one if I was in your situation...

A B router will probably be fine for you. Whatever you do, don't get a Belkin router. I've had 2 just stop working on me for no reason. Now I have Linksys and it is doing find so far. D-Link is good too, I think. Belkin is evil. .. they usually cost more too.

From the specs you posted of your laptop before.. i'm suprised they would put a B nic w/ that.

And yes, like it's been said.. you can plug up stuff to a wireless router with cat5 cable, just like any other wired router. My brother plugs into out router because the router/modem are in his room.. but I use wireless.

- :uhhh:...I don't think it would matter which router you get though. Either a b or g router should work.

jazz

is there a major difference between the b and g routers?

Yeah, G is better... Your card says g/b because it is a G nic, but G cards will work with B routers too, but they will only at B speeds.

whooo

i got a d-link wireless router for my computer.. had to get a new pci card for this computer as well, cost 120$ for both, and its g

works decent.. it says that the signal strength is low even though the two are hardly 20 feet apart through a few walls

my old pci card was limited to 10Mbps and now i've bumped up to 108Mbps

any ideas as for increasing the signal strength? or does it even matter as long as it has some signal?
