- What and when is the next Pentium Processor going to be? It seems as if they release the new one every 3-5 years...does anyone have any info or have an estimate on its release?

- And yes dion, these have viruses... :eek2:

It was my understanding the core processors for Intel and AMD were to be out this month or at least this summer. You might want to Google for a few minutes.

I keep somewhat up to date on processors and that, and I haven't heard anything about a Pentium 5 per se. I think the "next" generation is the development of 64-bit processors, and possibly dual-core functionality, which virtually doubles the amount of tasks the computer can handle (by adding another processor of equal ability).

I think those would be pretty awesome... I think they are all available now, too. Not sure of the dual-core processors, but the 64-bit P4's definetly are.

I think a lot of people are actually happy with how their computers are capable of performing, and the cost of new developments these days would be pretty high, so completely new ventures in technology are not as likely to be taken.

My laptop is comparatively lowly in capability, and it runs a lot of things, including most games, very well and without a hiccup (well, in those terms, more likely a cough I suppose). High end 3D apps excluded.

- Yeah I went to Intel's web site quite a while ago and didn't really find anything, but I have heard remarks about those dual-core processors that you speak of Person...:thanku:

- I'm kind of asking about this because I plan on getting a new desktop pc in the next 3-4 months and I didn't know how soon PC's would have the new processors...

I think I want one too. My desktop is 7 years old... and I should have a propper hardware platform for photoshop, which I like to use for various stuff... and games.

- :that:...Mine is also fairly old, but it still runs pretty damn good for what it has. It can run numerous opened programs like my Macromedia Suite without hiccups, but opening large images/files is where you can tell that it's time for a new one.

Mine is pretty old too. I bought it back in February. I bought the low end AMD Athlon they offered because I had known these dual cores were on their way. Only thing is, I'd like to get a new mobo too since ATI probably won't make mine compatible with its Crossfire setup.

My speculations:

Right now, yes, they will move in the direction of 64 bit processors, because thats the immediate technology. But keep in mind, Sony just opened a HUGE door way. Which doorway?

The Cell Processor.

Right now, we have dual processors, which is one does one task, the other does another task. Switch off. One two, one two. The Cell is different.

It's called the Cell Processor, because it has individual processors that work in unison. Up to eight processors (currently) they work together, cutting the time of tasks. By a huge margine.

The PS3 has the cell processor, and it supposed to revolutionize it. They plan to put them in TVs also, and other appliances.

Bright future for technology. I believe Pentium and AMD will begin producing these in computers, but not sure when, of course. I hope soon, it'll make things so much easier.

Yup. I had heard about it before, but hadn't read anything about it. It's the cover story on the newest PC magazine though.. so I read it. Steve Jobs didn't see the IBM chips progressing anymore. He thinks intel chips will be able to be smaller and more powerful while running cooler.
