hhoneycutt Paying 12 bucks a month for a game is insane.
Yeah really...with all the added updates that are constantly put into the game, and 30 days of endless entertainment. Paying much more than that for one night out makes much more sense. :cheeky: But really you can't expect it to be free, Im sure they spend more a month on bandwith than i make in a year.

Like I posted in another thread..............that's nothing compared to what happened in Everquest:
Online gaming is actually very profitable. I've made around 10k in the last few years selling off accounts, and items on eBay. This coming from a casual gamer is pretty good. It's not uncommon for hardcore gamers to pull in much more than that. I know people that have brought in +50k doing this. Also, what this guy did is peanuts. Do a google search on "Everquest+Yantis". A guy sold his character leveling business for EQ for over a million dollars a few years back.
Edit: Apparently, I underestimated the amount of money the company was sold for. Here's the article on it:
Boca Raton, FL – January 22nd, 2004 – Internet Gaming Entertainment, Ltd. (“IGE”) (www.ige.com), the worldwide leader in the market for buying and selling virtual property used in multiplayer online games, announced today that it has agreed to acquire substantially all of the assets of Yantis Enterprises, Inc. (www.mysupersales.com).
The deal involves both cash and equity in IGE’s parent company, IGE U.S. LLC (“IGE U.S.”), headquartered in Boca Raton, Florida, according to Randy Maslow, Senior Vice President and General Counsel of IGE U.S.
Massively multiplayer online role-playing games (“MMORPGs”) like EverQuest and Ultima Online are filled with virtual property — things like magic weapons, houses, in-game currency, and characters that are bought and sold on auction exchanges, with thousands of dollars trading hands every day. The total trade volume for virtual property is estimated by Professor Edward Castronova, professor of economics at Cal-State Fullerton, to exceed $400m annually, with an undetermined portion of that amount annually captured in real-world dollars by dealers in virtual currency and goods.
With more than 80 employees and thousands of suppliers, IGE is the largest provider in the world of virtual currency exchange and game-enhancement services to players of MMORPGs. The company provides 24x7x365 customer service and tech support from its state of the art operations center in Kowloon Bay, Hong Kong.
“Jonathan Yantis is an entrepreneur who blazed the trail in creating a market for the exchange of virtual currency and property,” said Brock Pierce, CEO of IGE U.S. “This acquisition is a big step for both us and the virtual currency exchange market as a whole, and solidifies our position as the largest player in this market by far.”
Mr. Yantis will be joining IGE U.S. as Chief Operating Officer and a member of the company’s Board of Managers. The other members of the Board include Mr. Pierce, Mr. Maslow and Alan Debonneville, President of the IGE subsidiary in Hong Kong.
“This is a marriage of the two pioneers in this industry,” said Jonathan Yantis. “I’m excited to be joining IGE and look forward to our future successes together.”
To clarify, Yantis (Yantis Enterprises) was paying people in 3rd world countries to level characters for him in Everquest. In turn, he used this to sell the accounts on eBay for thousands of dollars while paying these people very minimum wages. He also controlled over 95% of the games market for items and cash, which he would sell through his eBay business.

I've been playing since release. Joined the server Lothar, because of the SNL skit (...of the hill people!) I have a lvl 60 rogue, and a lowbie priest I fuck around with. I also run the largest guild on the server. Drawing unemployment for six months came at a perfect time.

i would much rather pay the money for live and be able to play several games online. paying that much per month for one game is nuts. i don't care how many updates you get or how much it costs them for bandwith.

If I had a movie that I enjoyed that never ended and it cost me 12 bucks a month, I would pay it. I would do the same with a never ending book I really enjoyed. When I was into console games, I would buy on average one or two games a month. Thats 100 dollars for less entertainement than I am getting now for 12, and an initial 50 dollar purchase.
Furthermore, many of the video games now you can have beaten in a weekend, so there is 50 dollars gone. I am not trying to change anyone, just telling you how I rationalize it. I've not bought a game since Wow came out in November, so I have 50+3x12. I'm looking at 86 dollars for 4 months, I probably saved 200 dollars.

they design a game thats going to take pretty much forever to get to a lvl that matters
they dont include any single player aspect whatsoever
they give you one month free to make you crave more
they then slug you a wad of cash per month because during your free period you started a druid that LOOKED like it MIGHT go places
two months later youve wasted over $100 (AUSD) becuse your druid was actually useless and the whole damn game is run by 14 year olds and their "clans" or being over run by advertisements claiming to have the "cheapest super-dooper fist fucker of a weapon ever"
ust go to blahblahblah...
man...when ive got money to waste, ive got drugs to buy

If you've ever played any of the Warcraft games it would make a bit more sense to you, but heres a shot.
There are two factions, Alliance and Horde. Alliance = humans, dwarves, elves shit like that. Horde = trolls orcs shit like that
You do quests, solo or multiplayer to increase your character, learn professions explore a world, and compete with the opposing faction. It's really fun, and highly addictive. Blizzard has a real good method to their madness, so its not something that you would have to devote years to getting your character to the end game content. Slaying dragons and shit.
Worldofwarcraft.com probably illustrate it better. EB Games gave it a 9.5, which is as high as I've ever seen them give a PC game. X-play gave it 5/5 stars.

Also, if you're like me, when you have had enough of the game you can usually turn a profit by selling your account on ebay. Right now, the going rate for a level 60 character depending on class is around $500. Not bad for a game that's only been out since late November. You figure, the game cost $50. The first 3 months were free (may have only been one month). So you've only spent an additional $14. You would have profited over $430. I'll take that over buying 2-3 games a month at $50 a pop any time.
