I reformatted my hard drive a couple of months ago because I had some pretty bad viruses on it.

Almost immediately after doing so, I started to have a strange problem. First of all, I have some annoying spyware that WILL NOT go away. I've tried ad-aware, I do disk clean-up all the time, and I erase my cache about four times a week. It usually only comes up when I'm logged into messenger. It shows little grey caution screens that say things like "WARNING! Your computer could become infected with a virus...go to www.insert-ginnicky-website-here.com to fix it." I would guess it's in my registry or something now. Anyone know how to fix that?

The weird problem, though, is that my sound will randomly stop working. Every few weeks, it just stops working, and I do a system restore, and everything is normal again until the next time it happens. I have AVG anti-virus, and I run Housecall on my computer a lot, and nothing comes up through either of those.

Any thoughts?

P.S...giving your advice in the form of "Computer Help for Dummies"-type speak would be most helpful, as my knowledge of computers is basic.

I *think* I figured out the annoying pop-up spyware shite. It was a matter of turning off the messenger pop-up allowance, and downloading those annoying Windows XP Service packs.

I still don't know what to do about the sound. Maybe that will work itself out because I downloaded all of this stuff.

First thing after I install OS is disable that and a few other "services".

Hilarious how after being on the internet for 1 minute, you are bombarded with spyware shit

No...that piece of shit is what probably got me in trouble in the first place.

I'm bumping this thread because that sound shit started happening again today. I've had to do two system restores in the last half hour. My sound is working fine, and then it just...stops. So, the system restores fix it, but what the fuck? I have no idea why this is happening.

Last night, we installed a wireless router...but I wouldn't think that would cause this...

You really should install the windows updates...

Did you figure out how to disable messenger? (to stop the pop up things)

For the sound problem I woudl first try deleteing your sound drivers in the device manager, and reinstalling them (or just restarting your computer and letting windows rebuild them).

I did disable messenger, so that pop-up thing isn't an issue anymore.

I'll try that, Iha. Why not, right? Sometimes it's just that simple. Thank you! :hug2:

Yeah, I would reinstall your sound drivers.

I've heard of this happen to other people, and none of them knew what killed their sound suddenly. It happened to me once... I think. Or that was a dream. sometimes I don't know.

In any case, I feel your pain entirely. I had a friend with some of these bad problems too. The spyware part, that is.
