Chilling Internet Video Depicts Insurgents Shooting Down Helicopter

Statement Says Insurgents Killed Lone Survivor

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- A chilling Internet video accompanies a claim of responsibility by Islamic insurgents for shooting down a helicopter in Iraq Thursday, killing 11 civilians.

The video begins with an unseen cameraman breathing heavily as he runs toward the flaming wreckage. Two bodies are visible -- one of them nearly charred. Someone says in Arabic, "Look at that filth."

Next, the video shows what appears to be the lone survivor lying in tall grass. The cameraman yells at him in English to "Stand up!" But the survivor says in accented English, "I can't. It's broken."

The survivor, who's believed to be Bulgarian, is helped to his feet by the gunman. He tries to walk, but has difficulty. Next, the man raises his hand as if gesturing for someone not to do something.

Then he's killed in a spray of bullets by gunmen shouting in Arabic, "God is great."

Six Americans Among Those Killed

The dead from the crash included six American security contractors who were working as bodyguards for U.S. diplomats. Three Bulgarian crew members were also killed. The fate of the other two passengers has not been confirmed, but a statement was posted on the Internet, along with video purporting to show the shooting of a lone survivor.

The statement was in the name of the Islamic Army in Iraq. It reads: "Heroes of the Islamic Army downed a transport aircraft belonging to the army of the infidels and killed its crew and those on board in the regions of al-Taji north of Baghdad."

The statement goes on to say: "One of the crew members was captured and killed."

An official at the Bulgarian company that owned the helicopter said at least one surface-to-air missile hit the chopper.

Video on television showed burning wreckage and person belongings scattered across a wide area at the crash site 12 miles north of Baghdad.

Military officials said the helicopter was doing work for the Defense Department.

Embassy officials said the MI-8 helicopter was contracted from SkyLink Air and Logistic Support, a Washington-based company.

They said the Americans worked for Blackwater USA, a security contractor. The North Carolina-based firm provides security for State Department officials in Iraq.

The chartered flight is believed to be the first civilian aircraft shot down in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion two years ago.

This reminds me of some time I spent on the border of Iraq. We had blown up a bridge leading into Kuwait to keep suicide bombers from driving across to our basecamp and the marketplace prior to the base. As far as 500 yards out, every 50 yards we had signs up in Arabic, English, etc.... warning people we would fire on anyone that drove near the mobile bridge we had put up. Every single day, a truck, van, car would drive into the kill zone at least 3 times a day. Every single day, at least 3 times a day, we were forced to light these people up. Every single one of them were loaded with explosives. They would have loved nothing more than to drive a truck into our camp or the market and kill every single person around. They have zero regard for human life.
