December 24th, 2004, 07:40 PM
Alright. Personally I've never felt AIC were all that atmospheric, not like Ænima or Sigur Ros or anything. I've just always thought they made good, if sometimes predictable, rock music.

I didnīt mean at all they are atmospheric. I was trying to say that, for some reason, their songs always left an overall dark, somewhat sick impression on me, and that was the good stuff about it.

I just wanted everyone to know that I was watching a show on the history of popular music in America.
Some record exec. and that Brett Michels(?) of Poison (?)... :sniper: said that Nirvana was the worst thing to ever happen in popular music, and that music was happy and entertaining pregrunge...that AIC was worse, they just destroyed music as we knew it

AIC's one of my all-time favorites, as a few of you here know (you know who you are). It was the vocal harmonies that grabbed me from the get-go. I heard Would? and I was hooked. My favorite album is Dirt, followed closely by JOF. Some days, JOF is my favorite. And the Unplugged was just incredible in my book. It's my favorite Unplugged.

Alice In Chains. what a band. Jar of Flies is my favourite AIC album followed closely by Dirt and Unplugged.

Some more AIC reuniting talk:
(this is from a Jerry Cantrell board)

Steve Hochman of The Los Angeles Times is reporting
that the surviving members of the popular Seattle
grunge-metal group ALICE IN CHAINS, whose singer Layne
Staley died of a drug overdose in 2002, are exploring
ways they might be able to perform again on a regular
basis.

The seeds were planted this past February when
guitarist Jerry Cantrell, bassist Mike Inez and
drummer Sean Kinney reunited at a benefit for victims
of the Indonesian tsunami. At that show, which took
place in Seattle, four vocalists — TOOL's Maynard
James Keenan, PUDDLE OF MUDD's Wes Scantlin,
DAMAGEPLAN's Pat Lachman and HEART's Ann Wilson —
stepped in for Staley.

"The guys had so much fun that they thought maybe
there's something else we want to do," Bill Siddons,
who co-manages the band with original manager Susan
Silver, tells The Los Angeles Times. "We'd love to
find a way to let these guys perform together and have
the fun they had and honor and respect what they
created in the past, as well as Layne's
contributions."

What shape that might take is very uncertain at this
point, though Siddons insists there will be no reality
show to find a singer, ā la "Rock Star".

"That's a perfect example of what happens when you
marry television and music badly," Siddons says. "It's
not what ALICE was ever about."

They may not even be looking for a lead singer, at
least not one full-time member, Siddons adds. While
they're open to the potential of something along the
lines of the current QUEEN tour (in which veteran
rocker Paul Rodgers is filling in for the late Freddie
Mercury), that's far from a given.

"We might do a date here or there if there are
opportunities to get a special guest to sing," Siddons
says. "That's been discussed. More likely at this
point we'll do benefits rather than paying gigs."

"Part of the enigma," Silver tells The Los Angeles
Times, "was they didn't play that much."

That, she said, was as much the case for the band as
for the fans, and the February show let the musicians
get a taste of what they'd missed.

"It was so terrific for them to play together," she
said. "But they're not ready to announce a new person,
make a new record and start the cycle over yet. They
want to just go have fun and give a tip of the hat to
Layne and the people who enjoyed the music."

Nostawen

Yeah, I read this some days ago. I think theyīre doing well about taking things slowly and with the "have fun" kind of mentality. Then again, I just think they shouldnīt look for another singer. Jerry should take the vocal parts, he definitely can stand the challenge.

Yeah, I agree. Nothing too permanent or anything, which is good. If they're really enjoying playing together, nothing should stop that. But I can't picture a permanent lead vocalist under the name of AIC.

Nostawen
August 21st, 2005, 11:31 PM

bleuMadonna
August 21st, 2005, 11:36 PM
Yeah, they could tour with different guests. That would be fun. Jerry can definitely sing a good part of the AIC catalog, so some guests doing the really high Layne parts might be kind of cool. Wouldn't mind seeing Maynard with them ...

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SURGEON PREDICTS COMPLETE RECOVERY

JERRY CANTRELL ON THE MEND AFTER SURGERY

Guitar great Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains underwent surgery earlier this week after complaining of acute pain in his left shoulder. He was admitted to Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles where Dr. Stephen J. Lombardo, a noted sports medicine practitioner, attended him.

The surgery included the repair of Cantrell’s glenoid labrum, a ring of fibrocartilage that is part of the shoulder joint as we as the removal of bone spurs. Cantrell’s condition is not uncommonly found in musicians and athletes such as baseball players. Dr. Lombardo who is team physician for the NBA Lakers and WNBA Sparks and is orthopaedic consultant to both the L.A. Dodgers and Angels as well as the NHL L.A. Kings, noted, “I would consider Jerry Cantrell an athlete, as well.” He added “Jerry is a great patient” and predicted a complete recovery. “The prognosis is excellent,” he stated, “Jerry should be able to resume his full range of activity in a few months.”

For his part, Cantrell stated, “It’s tough not being able to play for a while but I’m really looking forward to getting back out and performing without being in constant pain. Big thanks to Dr. Lombardo and the staff at Kerlan-Jobe for getting this sorted out.”

Cantrell’s next scheduled performance is set for March 10th when he and his Alice In Chains bandmates, Sean Kinney and Mike Inez, are scheduled to appear in an episode of VH1’s “Decades Rock Live!” a tribute to Heart that will take place at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. A spring air date for the program is to be announced shortly.

Here's to a speedy recovery!

considering that jerry wrote 90% of alice's songs and also sang a great deal i think it's pretty stupid when people can't get into his solo stuff but like alice. pretty much any of the degradation trip songs (with the exception of a few - like give it a name) could have been alice in chains songs. and that's a fact, to prove it all you need to do is listen.

The REASON I've lost interest in it is because, well... Jerry has. For all intents and purposes, he's preety much given up on the solo thing to give the fans what HE thinks they want. Which of course is the Alice stuff. It just sucks cause his attitude is still stuck in the 90s and he just doesn't have the confidence in his solo material that he should have.

I think I agree with the confidence part. I donīt know why, but I have the same feeling, itīs like he doesnīt feel secure enough outside Alice In Chains (and thatīs stupid, because his solo stuff is great, and because, like we all know, most of Aliceīs music were his). Besides, the record companies heīs been on never seemed interested enough in supporting him.

AMEN!!! I suspect the whole "bringing back of Alice" thing has been prompted by greedy record slobs looking to milk the Alice tit for all it's worth, and Jerry being the unorganized person he is (HIS words, people... not mine) he's leading them right to it.

:bleu: , I know you don't let that kind of stuff affect you as a fan and I know that I shouldn't either (and I typically don't) but in this one instance I'm trying to be as loud about it as I possibly can because JC fans have ALWAYS had more faith in his solo work than he ever has. I have to agree here as well. I'm sure it's the money-grubbing fucktards who want to live in the past. I mean, really, do people want an artist never to grow or try another direction? I know I don't. And they wonder why the record business is so fucked up.

I really don´t want to sound like a goddamn shrink...but maybe after he witnessed what the pressures of being a frontman did with Layne (and with a lot of his peers), he really wants to avoid being in the spotlight. Anyway, I´m not assuming that Layne´s drug addiction was all about that (because I´m sure it´s not true), but being exposed all the time as Alice´s frontman really shouldn´t have helped.

I really don´t know how reliable this info is but well, here it is anyway. Judge by yourselves...

It's Official: ALICE IN CHAINS Is Back! - Feb. 21, 2006

ALICE IN CHAINS guitarist Jerry Cantrell's official web site administrator, who goes by the name of "ceojc", has confirmed that the band will be reuniting for an appearance at the Nova Rock festival in Austria in mid-June (web site), with "a lot more" concert dates yet to be announced.

"I hate to keep on saying this, but as most of you have heard, ALICE will be performing at Nova Rock in Austria," "ceojc" writes on Cantrell's official message board. "This is true. ALICE is back.

"Europe is a long way to go for just one show, so I feel that we are going to have a lot more to do.

"Because this is Europe and a big festival, don't count on any special ALICE tickets but you never know what the future brings.

"Let me explain why things went down the way they went down. It was not the way we wanted it to happen. The festival promoter secured a bunch of really big bands like METALLICA, GUNS N' ROSES and ALICE. The promoter decided to have a big press conference on Monday [Feb. 20]. We had not finished securing the 'business side' of the show by the time Monday rolled around. Because Monday was President's Day, our office was closed and we could not make a decission regarding releasing the info to you guys. Our European agent, because our office was closed, made an executive decision to release the show info. We fully support his choice but could not say anything untill we spoke to him to get the full stroy and due to the time difference and travel we could not make the announcement untill just now.

"Guys, please remember that nothing is official unless it comes from our office. We like to surprise you but sometimes that is not always possible.

"Jerry, Mike [Inez, bass], Sean [Kinney, drums] and the managment team are doing our best to keep you guys informed. You mean a lot to the guys and they want you to know that."

ALICE IN CHAINS frontman Layne Staley died on April 5, 2002 from a mixture of heroin and cocaine. Staley was found dead two weeks later, surrounded by intravenous drug paraphernalia in his Seattle apartment. The death certificate reads Staley's death resulted from "an acute intoxication due to the combined effects of opiate (heroin) and cocaine." The death was classified as "accidental."

As previously reported, COMES WITH THE FALL vocalist/guitarist and member of Jerry Cantrell's touring band William DuVall has been tapped to sing lead vocals with ALICE IN CHAINS at the taping of an episode of VH1 Classic's "Decades Rock Live!", a tribute to HEART that will take place March 10 at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City. It is not presently clear if DuVall will be joining the group on any of the other dates that are currently being scheduled.

bleuMadonna

Yeah, he did sing with them, but I thought William DuVall did a way better job on Angry Chair., Man in the Box and Rooster :bleu: It was pretty amazing to see the Alice boys together, I have to admit, even though I've had reservations about their getting back together this way. The crowd was wicked into it. I've never seen so many Alice shirts in one place. I would say the crowd was way more into Alice than into Heart, though there were a crapload of Heart people as well. Btw, Ann Wilson is still the shit. That woman has one fucking amazing voice.

A couple of my friends talked to Sean Kinney at some after-party and he told them Alice was doing the shows this year in a tribute to Layne and for the fans. He said they plan to put out new music, but that it will be under a different name and with a singer and all, but they don't have the singer yet.

They had to redo Would? and Man in the Box because of a technical glitch during MITB and some off-key singing during Would? I didn't think Phil did that great, to be honest. Plus, they will have to cut all kinds of stuff because Phil was swearing up a storm, haha. The show had a weird pacing because of the filming, I guess. Alice did their stuff right away, and then Heart and Alice and William DuVall and Duff McKagan (who played with Alice) came out for Rooster. That performance gave me chills. William was really on for it. Jerry Cantrell and Dave Navarro also played guitar on Heart's Barracuda, which was way cool. Jerry and Nancy Wilson at one point were doing the dueling guitar jam and they were both on their knees playing their asses off. It was fucking cool.

I'm so glad I got to go to this. Can't wait for the DVD, hehe.

So William DuVall is singing vocals on the tour this summer.

Who the fuck is William DuVall?

This reunion is a mistake.
William DuVall is a kick-ass singer from the band Comes With The Fall, a three-piece. His band was Jerry Cantrell's backing band during the Degradation Trip tour a few years ago. His band also did double duty by opening for Cantrell.

www.comeswiththefall.com

www.myspace.com/comeswiththefall

They have a new single on the myspace site. They were supposed to come out with a new album soon, and it's done, but they want to release it when they can give their full attention to touring and promoting for it properly. They can't do that while William's doing the AIC thing, so they are releasing an EP with the new single and three songs.

Jerry played a mix of his stuff and AIC stuff on that tour and having seen them three times back then, William did a great job just for the fact that he didn't try to sound like Layne. He made the songs his, but not so much that the diehard Layne fans would flip out because it wasn't Layne. I think they have every right to continue playing music together, but I'm not keen on them calling it AIC because Layne was a huge part of AIC and that just doesn't seem right. Sean Kinney said in an interview a couple of months ago that after they tour on this AIC reunion thing, they will have new music under a different name. I'm kind of hoping it will be whatever Jerry had ready for his next solo record.

Hehe, yup, he is. I agree on the singer. There would be so many expectations with a bigger name. William is really good, and sadly, not enough people know about him. The people who saw Jerry in 2001-02 know him, though, and the CWTF fans who were around before the Jerry Cantrell tour.

Well, I got to go to the Boston show after all! And it was bad-ass! It was all hard stuff (about 70 minutes) and the boys looked genuinely happy to be rocking their asses off. William DuVall did great and I actually said hello to him after the show because he came out of the venue and hung out for a few minutes. Sean said at the end of the show that he had pneumonia and that we helped him get through it  He is so hot, hehe.

The highlight was Love, Hate, Love. William nailed it and it gave me chills. The place was jam-packed and I couldn't move much or headbang much on the floor. It also was like one big massive sing-along because everybody in there knew all the words. I don't remember the exact order of the set list, but here are some of the other songs they did:

Sludge Factory (the opener...awesome choice)
Dam that River
We Die Young
Again
Rain When I Die
Junkhead (!)
Down in a Hole
Rooster
It Ain't Like That (I went nuts on this one, well, as nuts as I could, hehe)
Angry Chair
Dirt (this was killer)
Would?
Them Bones
*edit* How could I forget Man in the Box?? It was a scream-along, lol. Awesome!

It was cool to hear some stuff from the self-titled as they didn't tour much for that when it came out. They sounded as if they hadn't missed a beat.

Agent, it's William DuVall from the band Comes With the Fall. He and his band also toured with Jerry Cantrell on the Degradation Trip world tours. He's very capable and he doesn't try to imitate Layne Staley. For the most part, people are supportive, but there are a lot Layne fans who'd rather the band shrivel up and die, but whatever. ALICE IN CHAINS has commenced the songwriting process for a new studio album. In an online posting by The Baldy — whose job is "to travel the world with ALICE IN CHAINS and send photos, videos and blog entries back to [the webmasters] at AliceInChains.com" — he writes, "I've been [in Los Angeles] for five days, sat through three rehearsals and one demo recording session, listened to several other demos, and I can happily report that the new stuff is kicking my ass right out of my pants. Remember that these songs are still only in the early stages of being written too. Just in the time I've been here, the guys have taken a riff and worked on it and expanded it and added layers to it, and now it's practically a full-fledged song."

As previously reported, one of ALICE IN CHAINS' best-known tracks, "Rooster", will be featured on the tonight's (Thursday, April 26) episode of "Supernatural". The show airs nationally on the CW. Check your local listings to find out exactly when you should tune in and watch it.

ALICE IN CHAINS has been added to the list of artists who will take the stage for tribute performances at the second annual "VH1 Rock Honors". This year's celebration will honor the music and influence of OZZY OSBOURNE, GENESIS, HEART and ZZ TOP.

These honorees will perform live, along with additional tribute bands QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE, NICKELBACK, GRETCHEN WILSON and KEANE, on Saturday, May 12 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.

Hosted by Bam Margera ("Jackass", "Viva La Bam"), "VH1 Rock Honors" will air on VH1 Thursday, May 24 at 9 p.m Eastern. Presenters will include Billy Bob Thornton, Robin Williams, Criss Angel, Taylor Hawkins and more.

ALICE IN CHAINS filmed its concert on October 31, 2006 in Providence, Rhode Island for a possible DVD release. The Halloween performance was two hours and forty minutes long, with the group playing additional songs for the filming. There's no indication yet of when the DVD could surface or what other features it might contain.

The group's most recent North American tour featured the reunited band playing a two-hour show that included an acoustic middle section as well as an eight-minute video tribute to late ALICE IN CHAINS frontman Layne Staley.

Staley died in 2002 after a long struggle with drug addiction that effectively put ALICE IN CHAINS on ice in 1996.

If they are going to release new shit they had better change the band name.

i was about to post that very same thing...it's a disgrace to use the aic name to help sell records.

out of respect for layne and for the classic albums they wrote togther, they should just put the fucking name to rest.

i guess i was mistaken. i always took aic to be a band that wouldn't do something that lame.

Yeah, they doctored up Pat's performance for the Heart tribute show. I was there, and his performance made me cringe. It was hard to take.

Ha I remember watching the live telecast and Anselmo sounding like complete crap, but then i just watched it on youtube and they doctored it so much that he actually sounded pretty cool.

From the AIC official site:
It's official - Alice will be touring North America starting late this summer. The guys (including William) will be joining their friends in Velvet Revolver on tour and both bands are really excited to be hitting the road together.

More details on this tour, including a list of show dates, will be posted on the website soon...
VR...sigh...but I will go because I must see Jerry.

Great and only original performance of Rotten Apple (from 93 I think)...I love the different guitar flourishes and vocal intensity variations that weren't on the record version. Layne was awesome, even when completely fucked up.

Sean Kinney is about the ONLY surviving member who's said publically that the name should be changed but that talk has definitely stopped. I guess they feel that the 10-minute tribute video is enough homage to Layne. :gay2:

It's idiotic for me to hope that William would go back to devoting his time to his own band at this point. I will say this though--if, after this album is released, William does not get his proper cut from the rest of the band there's going to be a LOT of pissed off Comes With The Fall fans.

For fucking real. I have thoroughly enjoyed William with AIC, but the CWTF fans have been waiting patiently for a tour from CWTF. It's been since '02 for most of us, except those Cali people who got to catch that mini-tour of four or five shows in March. Now that we have the new album, they need to kick that shit up LIVE!
