Hey I'm just getting an account so I can buy stuff from ebay... I really feel uncertain about it and stuff, I mean I have to add a credit card and I'm real touchy about my accounts and yeah I was wondering if anyone had much info on what exactly happens once I add my card. The help they provide is too annoying to look through.
Thanks for any help you can give me...

i've had a paypal account for a while now... never had a problem with it. they don't insure any of your money (if you are accepting payment through it to), so as soon as you get some.. might want to transfer it to your bank account. For just buying off ebay I wouldn't worry about. I didn't even think you had to have an account to buy stuff w/ paypal, just feel in the CC information everytime you buy. Oh well, I'm not really sure.. b/c i've always had an account.
oh and i use my bank account info too.. not CC but debit card.

I don't like the idea there how it says "I DON'T actually need money in my paypal account, your bank account will be charged etc etc!!!"
So basically I don't get that aspect.
I'd rather NOT link it to my account, and be able to transfer shit into it from a completely seperate bank account...
paygee
April 15th, 2005, 01:24 PM
you transfer money from your bank acct to your paypal acct. vise versa, it cant just withdraw money from your acct.

simple. when you visit their site just type in https://www.paypal.com, not http://www.paypal.com to make sure you're on their site and their site only.

Now it's offering me an extended use program thing... Is it worth it? I don't think I'll be going nuts with my account.
I mean it says I get unlimited withdrawal and I can add as many funds to the account as I like... I don't even know what my caps are now.

April 15th, 2005, 01:47 PM
just go for the standard account now and as you develop confidence with them upgrade later.

Alright, thanks for your help.
One last thing...
When I add funds can I buy stuff right away?
jazz
April 15th, 2005, 01:52 PM
as long as you see a balance, the money's there. however, when you transfer the money from your bank account to your paypal account, it takes about three working days for it to clear.

*ahem*
I'm now joining toolarmy for some reason, even though I've heard it's shit in some ways (i'm getting the basic package though).
Concerning security, it has https//etcetc in the address, but in firefox the little lock is red and broken - I don't know what this means. And paypal's was green and not broken. (I think I hate using sensitive information over the internet...)
And is it still perfectly safe or what?

It's called "phishing", Spark. I've been getting psuedo e-mails from "e-Bay" on my Hotmail account, and I didn't even HAVE the HM when I created my e-Bay profile.
Person, just be very very careful with anything that may look like an official e-mail from either PayPal or e-Bay.

Indeed. I got an e-mail purportedly from paypal asking me to update my billing info regarding my credit card expiration date or something and it gave me a link, which I didn't go for. It said my account would expire if I didn't update it. Well, I never did it and my account has been fine. It looked pretty official, too, but I never click on links regarding that type of stuff.

BINGO. The e-mails I keep getting tell me that my account has been compromised and has now been closed. NOT. The official e-mail address that I use for e-Bay is my IP one.
Also......another dead giveaway is misspelled words, and using "u" for you. Please, read the fine print in those e-mails before you click links, people. You won't be sorry.

sorry, person. i didn't return to this thread as i thought i had answered all your questions...anyways, yes, you should be fine. like many people have mentioned, do not take an email's word for it. if you get something saying that you need to reply with your login info or a credit card number, that should raise a red flag. that once happened to me a couple of years ago and i reported it immediately to paypal as a scam...
it turned out that i was right. some asshole was running this scam and a few people got fooled. just be careful and only handle paypal matters on their https:// site, no matter what it is. and if you're not sure, email one of their contact reps.
