did you try windows movie maker? its not the greatest piece of software in the world, but it gives you several video quality options and it should already be on your computer.

let me try to explain what i'm doing here...
see, i got the windows media center version of xp, and it lets you hook up a cable connection and watch live :tv: on your pc. i recorded a clip of this marlins double play that i wanted you guys to see/download. it's currently at about 15.7MB and it's only a few seconds long. :what:

fuck windows media, quicktime and realplayer. The quality sucks ass. Use XVID or DIVX to encode your files.

That's what I would have mentioned if I found this sooner. DivX is good, but I'm less familiar with Xvid (though I presume it is quite similar). I think you can download some free stuff from www.divx.com . Not sure though.
EDIT: I think it's the Dr. DivX program on that site, there's a free trial you should be able to use.

the program outputs the recorded tv clips automatically as .wmv files. could i use divx to encode from that format?

From the dr. divx site: "Turn Any File into DivX Video", in big and bold letters.

sorry. You should check it out, nonetheless. It's an extension of the official divx site, which is in the link I posted above somewhere.

dr. divx is the gay name for a different program by the same people, if I am not mistaken. I don't believe it's possible to encode with the player/codec download package.

how much will it reduce the file size by?

Read the site, Jazz! I'm not sure I haven't used it, but on the page it says it can reduce a DVD movie to a size low enough to fit on a CD-R.
Plus you know, some DVD players these days actually play DivX's. They're good.

oh damn, sorry. Anyway, it's probably your best(/easiest) bet, there's a free trial version available.

yeah, they not only blocked mp3s, they also blocked mp4 sites. i'm assuming the divx site has either mp3 or mp4 somewhere in their keywords.
i'll check it out later tonight, thanks.

IIRC if you dont register Divx 5, you cannot encode, or it adds a divx watermark or something.
XVID is completely free and it gives slightly better quality than Divx. All encoding and tv video capturing can be done with the free program Virtualdub.
