Hello there!

I am interested in buying an Mp3 player.

what should I look for?

How much should I spend on a decent one?

Does it matter if its bought in the Uk? will it be compatable with other countries?

I have no idea what I am looking at

i got one that cost 69quid. the battery supposedly last 8hrs. but i doubt that. and it only holds 128mb worth of music.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/search-handle-form/026-2119364-7876467

im gonna save up and get a 256mb one or a 512mb (that one should last 15hrs, which is better).

so i fancy this one (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0002WYSDQ/qid=1112548699/sr=8-7/ref=pd_ka_6/026-2119364-7876467)

and 78 aint too bad either

I bought an iPod, the 20 gig one, and I'm pretty happy with it. I know there are others who will recommend different players, but so far, I like this one. The one complaint I have is that the battery could last longer. It says you're supposed to get 12 hours of playing time, but I average about 9 or so. Some of the features eat up the power, like backlighting and what-not, but overall, it plays well. I like that it will hold 5,000 songs. I have about 2,000 on there right now. I'm not sure about it's compatibility or anything, though.

yeah but they cost 3 times as much. and you wont listen to 5000 songs on your way to work or something

yeah i use to walkaround with them. but they were too big and skipped. so i invested in a nice little mp3 player. its also funny how i see people walking around with the wires exposed. i always put it under my shirt

It was a bit pricey, but I like that I don't have to carry 30 CDs with me to work anymore. Plus, it saves the CDs. Now, I just play them on my home stereo, and I have a lot of my albums on hand in that little thing. I never know what I'm going to listen to, so I like having that variety...I'm a consumer ho when it comes to music; I admit it.

I walk around with a 128 cd case and a cd player. I don't were them outside of class cause i am always talking to someone so before class ends i put them back in my backpack.

i have a 20gb sony mp3 player

if you have the cash buy a really good one

do some research into flash memory, microdrive and harddrive technology... i can dig up some links for you if you care

the main question you need to answer is: what are you going to use it for?
if you are going to use it for music while working out/running... get a smaller one that has flash memory so it won't skip...
and so on.... there's at least 1 type of mp3 player for every imaginable application

I use a reel to reel machine. Sure I get a hernia carrying it around. Sure the girls won't talk to me. Sure the guys put kick me signs on my back. But you just can't beat the sound quality.

i think the Ipod 4gig mini is the best value at the moment for £140 thats a good price.

how is that the best deal?
4GB Mini is $200.00.. that's $50/GB.

30 GB PHOTO Ipod is $350... that's $11.67/GB [this is what i would get]

the 20 GB ipod is $300.. $15/GB

I'd say as far as ipod's go.. the 30 GB Photo would be the best. I like ipods b/c you can buy accessories for them (i.e. good skins, itrip, italk, etc). The ipod is also smaller than most other Mp3 Players in its class.

I've been the owner of a 512MB iPod shuffle for about 2 months now, and it's been a joy. It's fun and easy to set up music on it (holds about 8 hours) and is very good for when you're at the gym, so long as you don't sweat all over it.
It has a ~15 hour battery, and only costs $99. Serves me well.

I'm looking for a player that is good for both playing and storing music, i.e., hard drive. I would like to save me on buying a separate external HDD. Is the ipod any good for this purpose? I very much welcome your opinions.

Thanks

There are just a few options: the iPod, the Sony thing Capt has which I also forgot the name of (but it's a good player I think), and creative jukebox (a few versions, but are good players and data storage devices I think).

Those would be the best options. I think.

for just storage... an extra internal or external hard drive would be better.. I don't know about other mp3 players, but with an iPod, you can't transfer mp3s from the player to the computer (well you can if you get a program to hack the ipod.. and void your warranty). But then of course you can't listen to your music on the go.

Darken - Thanks

iha - I found this www.ipodsoft.com with all sortsa programs for the ipod. Does one still have to 'hack' it to use these programs?

Winamp has a plugin which lets you transfer mp3's quickly and easily onto your iPod (apparently, I haven't used it myself): http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details.php?id=138888

Darken Elise

Not ENTIRELY accurate...

You cannot LISTEN to your music through your iPod and then stop at a friends house and put the SAME FILES on someone else's computer. You can however simply load up your iPod with song files that you don't intend on listening to (for this bizarre scenario) and take the iPod to another computer and then thransfer those files...

Basically, it's a freakin' hard drive that happens to have a piece of music playing software on it. Songs listened to through the software can't be pirated to another machine, files carried outside of the software can be.

I hope that helps. I don't pirate music or move mine from machine to machine so iha's point means nothing to me, but I for some peeps it could be a deal breaker. Which reminds me, to further complicate things, if you have several computers, you can register I believe up to three that you can easily swap your iTunes music on and off of. Works for Macs, cannot speak for PC.

Good luck again.

How is it treating you though? You find it easy to use, etc? And can you record with it?

Capt
April 21st, 2005, 02:29 PM
i love it

its actually kind of difficult to use, but once you figure it out you can set it up nicely

i can't record with it, i'd need to buy the microphone/fm tuner/remote w/lcd screen accessory that i want.. i don't know if i can get it in canada though, haven't looked around for prices yet

the type of files that it compresses mp3s too (a mildly annoying feature) takes up very little space, i've got over 14gb left and 1534 songs.. i can't tell the difference between 64kbps atrac files and 320kbps mp3 files, the quality works out fine as long as you have a good quality mp3 before you convert it

Person
April 21st, 2005, 04:10 PM
sounds alright... Do you know what formats you can actually record to?

But you know how it goes, lossy formats being encoded to another lossy format is a very bad idea. Though I don't know what ATRAC's are.

It definetly does look cool though

Darken Elise
April 21st, 2005, 04:22 PM
ATRAC's are Sony's proprietary music file format. You're correct about copying an MP3 to another format, it just will never sound any better than the source MP3... Will you be able to tell the difference? Maybe, maybe not.

iPod: USB connect it, go to itunes, drag what you want. Thats all you need to do. If you want to get more sophisticated, there are other ways. I've found nothing wrong with my iPod, my mother's 60gig iPod, or both my parents two iShuffle. All the products have worked without a flaw.
