View Full Version : Building a gaming PC...

I've been outta loop when it comes to building a good gaming machine for a while now. Anyone got any links to some preferrable setups that give model numbers and write-ups on parts? All I need is a motherboard, chip, memory, and video card.
Im not looking for something thats cutting edge, just something that will play the latest games with relative ease.

- I'm not too familiar with gaming PC's and where to go for parts either, but Cyberpowersystems.com (http://www.cyberpowersystem.com/) is one place that might help...

get AMD 64 FX, 1 GB of Corsair XMS seriese RAM, and a ATI X850 and you will be set.
For the motherboard i'm not sure what is best for the AMD 64 FX right now, but I can ask my friend sometime (he just got one). I usualy get Asus motherboards b/c I have been happy w/ them in the past, but he got something else.
The FX alone costs $750.00 [http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-459&depa=0]
the ATI is about $515.00
the memory is about $300.00 I think.

my post was to point out that if you want help picking out PC parts you need to let us know what kind of budget you're on. some people are willing to spend thousands of dollars, and other people want to spend $500.00.
I know you said not cutting edge, but still a price range would help :nanner:

well, i dont really have a price range. Im going to piece this together over the next 3-4 months. The video card being the last purchase. Im asking the same question on another forum to get a broad range of ideas and info. People here are suggesting AMD while another guy said he's had experience with both intel and amd and suggests intel. This is what I have pieced together so far. This is by no means final, just my first draft...
Motherboard: $103
Gigabyte GA-8I915P Duo-A
Socket: Intel LGA775
Chipset: Grantsdale P(915P) + ICH6
FSB: 800/533MHz
RAM: 2x Dual Channel DDR2 533/400, 2x Dual Channel DDR 400/333 (4GB Max)
IDE: 1x ATA 100/66 (ICH6), 2x ATA 133 (VT6410)
Slots: 1x PCI-E x16, 1x G.E.A.R., 2x PCI, 2x PCI-E x1
Form Factor: ATX
CPU: $181
Intel LGA 775 P4 530J w/ HT
Clock: 3.0GHz
FSB: 800MHz
Cache: L1/12k+16k; LS/1MB
Im definately getting 1GB in memory. But whats the main difference in DDR and DDR2? Is it a big difference or will DDR be just fine?

Well having both AMD and INtel systems, I'd say that AMD is better for gamming. If you really want some EXCELLENT information from people that know what they're talking about, than you might want to try posting this question in the "General Hardware" section of www.hardforum.com.
Fair warning though, they will bite your head off if you don't give some kind of price range. If you just have questions about specific hardware, post in their proper forums (or you could just go the the specific forums and read what they say.. more than likely you can find out the answere to your question yourself.)
A lot of people like AMD for gamming because it is able to overclock much more than INTEL's cpu's are able to. I don't ever overclock, because I don't feel the need to get a few more MHz to suffice for a possible shorter lifespan for my equipment (although if you don't over clock too much i'm sure you're fine). I also enjoy my warranties :)

Tweeter center, greater chance of being shot at by Camden denizens.
Ford Pavilion, greater chance of being mauled/bitten/killed by a wild animal.
