- My friend says that you should try pinging this web site (encircling.us) with Command Prompt, meaning:

1.) Open up Command Prompt
2.) type "ping encircling.us" (no quotes)
3.) Press enter

- By pinging, you are getting the command prompt to display diagnostic information regarding the connectivity between neighboring routers. Additionally, the ping measures the multicast packet drop rates between neighboring multicast routers.

Try this link from Linksys.com (http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=464&p_created=1084211607&p_sid=eNhxupAh&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX 3Jvd19jbnQ9Mzc5JnBfcHJvZHM9MCZwX2NhdHM9JnBfcHY9JnB fY3Y9JnBfc2VhcmNoX3R5cGU9YW5zd2Vycy5zZWFyY2hfbmwmc F9zY2ZfbGFuZz0xJnBfcGFnZT0xJnBfc2VhcmNoX3RleHQ9Y2F ubnB0IGNvbm5lY3QgdG8gdGhlIGludGVybmV0IHdpcmVsZXNzI GEgKyBnIHVzaW5nIFhQ&p_li=&p_topview=1)

so, let me get this straight. you're running a cat5 straight from your laptop port to a modem? or into a router?

i might not be able to help you, but i'll try damn it.

if you're running straight into a router, try opening up a browser and visiting this addy: 192.168.1.1 username: admin password: admin

from there, you need to setup your isp login info, and indicate whether it's a PPPoE, PPTP, Static IP, etc.,

What did you do, rip that out of networking dot com?

Ping will let you know if there is a connection at all. Some sites are unpingable though

If they secured their router you are SOL

It will indicate if it's locked, though, won't it? I am doing the same thing as Jake. I have a linksys G. I usually get three or four networks up on the screen, but only two aren't secure. Jake, sometimes, you have to find a better spot in your house to get a stronger signal. If it's not strong enough, you won't get the net even though it says you are connected.

- I believe my friend found the definition on a similar site, yes. It still don't make sense to me either, but he thought it would possibly make sense to jake...

I will try to move the laptop then... and i know it is not a secure network. I can pick up 2 other secured networks, 1 of them is stupid and never changed the password from admin

If they secured their router you are SOL

if they had half a brain, yes.

jaketucker
March 15th, 2005, 10:22 PM
not that i'm aware of, and if there are im going to play dumb

jazz
