He tried to sell me some other piece of crap, but I had already done my homework. I remember from my Cost Accounting class in college, they said just because a sales person tries to sell you something less expensive, it doesnt mean he's such a nice and honest guy. It means that product has a higher markup. In other words, they may get an item for $100 and sell it for $200, and get another item for $50 and sell it for $175. He will recommend the $175 item because they are making $125 on it, rather than making only $100 on the other. Meanwhile you think he's doing you a favor by recommending the item that will cost you less. Scumbags.

The reason you see this sort of thing in stores like Circuit City has more to do with the fact that they hire off the street. You are dealing with people that don't work off of commission at a store like this, so they aren't as educated about the product they are trying to sell as someone who is working off commission.

It breaks my heart Ken, when I worked for Circuit they would send us to Richmond VA for corporate training and were constantly getting trained on products so we knew our shit inside and out. CC has changed a lot in the past few several years though. Hell, they don't even get comission there anymore!!! That's probably why no one really gives a shit about knowing the product.

The agreement is that you can't sell an item for more than the manufacturer allows. There is a ceiling, believe it or not.

The point is not who is marking it up. The point is that the sales person is told by the retailer to push the item with the higher markup. I dont give a crap who marks it up. Bottom line, too many people dont do their own research and rely on sales people for advice. Advice that is biased and not always in your best interest.
